New Orleans help needed

Post by Sidew13 »

My mom, dad, wife and I are planning on a 2 night stay in NO the ferst week in November. We need advice for hotel room and places to see.

-looking at the area around the French Quarter
-would like the budget around $75-100 per night if posible
-sight seeing needs to be at a VERY relaxed pace with elderly people involved

I know we're going to M'ville and Cafe DuMond, but what other ideas for a day and a half glance? :o

hey Joe go to the Garden District. Take the trolly. There is a fantastic breakfast place on the trolly stop right in the curve. I can't think of the name. You might even consider staying in the Garden District area. Probably cheaper and definitely away from the debautchery.
When they run you out of town make it look like you are leading the parade.

GREAT Idea Rick. I know we want to see the FQ, but tring to away from the debautchery is a good idea with the folks. I give that area a look see, too.

There is a Hampton Inn on St. Charles Ave - in the Garden District. Nice hotel, nice location. . and a Parrot in the Lobby. :D It's a block or so from the streetcar. . trolley?. . streetcar I think. (All I know is that the locals rolled their eyes at me when I called it the wrong thing!) Bring exact change - it's $1.25 - and a great ride down a very pretty street, past Tulane. . past the Zoo and I think that great breakfast place is called The Trolley Stop. :D

Too many great restaurants to mentions. . If you do the 'touristy' ones - Commander's Palace. . Emerils. . you need reservations and men need to wear jackets. Good food at both - but you can eat better for less.

Two of my favorites. . Mr. B's (get the Gumbo Ya Ya!!). .and K Paul's (Paul Prudomme's place). . but, I have also found the best places wandering around and checking out the menus outside.

Bourbon Street is a must. . to say that you have seen it. . but maybe go during the day for Mom & Dad. . on your way to M'ville. If Mom and Dad are up for it. .there are some great walking tours. . lots of history. .cemetarys. .old houses. . .

Have a great time - it's one of my favorite cities!

Trolley tours is more what I'm looking for, not a whole lot of walking. As far as places to stay, we would prefer something peaceful, not in the middle of all the action like the Garden District that Rick mentioned. As far as food goes, I DON"T DRESS UP, and the only jacket I own is for winter time. So inexpensive and layed back is the order of the day. :D

Here's some good web sites: www.frenchquarterhotels.com
www.neworleansreservations.com
www.nola.com (the best one, has links to everything)
www.neworleansonline.com (has good French Quarter hotel prices)

Garden District is beautiful. You can also go on horse-drawn carriage tours through the French Quarter, not that expensive and you can see it without all the walking. They have all kinds of tours and stuff, have them send you one of those little New Orleans guide books (I forgot what they call them). Gosh now I'm all jealous here. I LOVELOVELOVE Nawlins.

Actually we're doing a mini-Gulf coast swing. We're staying in Panama City Beach, Fl for 2 weeks the first of November. While there, we're going one day to Gulf Shores Alabama to see Lulu's. The later in the week we're going to stop in at Pascagoula, to see Jimmy's home town. Then drive on over to the Big Easy for a couple of nights.

www.neworleans.com is a great link to find anything and everything you want to know for touristy stuff. If you want to rule out walking, there are a few of the cemetary tours and swamp tours that are "ride-along" tours. There are also some horse and buggy rides around the French Market area.

Thanks 12volt. I've been to that site, it does have a lot of info.

What I'm mainly looking at is personal recommendations and experiences. What do other BNers have to say?

There are many bed & breakfasts in the Big Easy, we stayed at The Rathbone Inn on Espanade, about 3 blocks from the FQ and not far from Margaritaville. As for eating, the whole town is pretty casual. You can spend anywhere from $10- 100 for dinner. Some of the best food we had came from a local bar, great po-boys.

I hate to pimp my job, but check out swavacations.com for some hotel suggestions.

Perhaps a cemetary tour would be fun!
