About 4 months later I realized the tequila WAS better.
If I had it to do again, I would have left her there and taken the tequila with me.

so true, you always know what you are getting with tequila!

Rent a car and drive east across the middle of the island. When you get to the beach on the east side, stop for a drink.

Follow the road south along the coast. When you get to the south end of the island, stop at the reggae bar across the street from the beach for another drink.
When you get back into town (San Miguel), there is a lot of good food within walking distance of the ferry pier. The museum has a good breakfast and Ernesto's Fajita Factory is my favorite for lunch.
If you want to snorkel, try to go on a small boat from one of the dive shops. It's much better than going on one of the big boats.

Carlos 'n Charlie's usually fills up with the "barely legal" crowd as soon as the first cruise ship of the day unloads. It slows down in the evening and the food ain't too bad.

Buenas Dias Mal .... your trip will be incredible. Check out my little blurb on the "Cancun Ideas" thread a few months ago. Skip Cozumel, and sail to Isla Mujeres for a fish BBQ on the beach. That is, if you can get away from the pool, poolbar and beach at your hotel!

If you have time, I recommend Xcaret park, which is right there at Playa del Carmen. We went there last fall when we stopped in Cozumel on a cruise and it was lots of fun. You can snorkel there, swim with dolphins (for an extra fee), there's an underground river to swim, all kinds of animals to see, a Mayan village, and some Mayan ruins. Here's their web site:
http://www.xcaret.com/indexxc.php.
My only complaint is that the time period for our excursion wasn't long enough to do/see everything at the park, but if you are staying around there and have more time, I would say it is worth a trip. PM me if you have questions.
Have fun on your trip!

We definitely won't be hard to find. I'll be surprised if my butt leaves the swim-up bar all week.

I went to Cozumel on a cruise in my pre-parrothead days and figured I'd try some local food.
I ate at Planet Hollywood

While staying at Playa we arranged a snorkeling trip to the cenotes. Was really cool. I never went snorkeling in fresh water before....
And yes, Tulum is a must. There is a beautiful beach there. I wished I had my bathing suit...

I also went snorkeling in Cozumel. That was fun too.
Hmm, I did the "booze cruise" in December 2003, don't remember anything about a mechanical bull...maybe it was a different one?

You should definitely go to Cancun, you can take a very comfortable (and cheap) trip on a coach bus from the PdC bus station, I think it's around $12 round-trip. Once in Cancun, it'll cost ya around $10 for a cab ride to the hotel zone, or you can spend 6 pesos and take the bus instead. The whole coast there is VERY easy to get around, there's very safe, cheap and reliable public transportation to anywhere you'd need to go.

Carlos and Charlie's is the place to lose a few hours of your life. I have spent about 18 hours of my life in that place and can only remember about 4 of them.

I have the pictures to prove it, but no recolection of those pics ever being taken. As far as the Tequila. With Tequila becoming the rage in the states, most Mexican Liquor Stores can't compete with the Mega Liquor store (BevMo) price you can get in the states, especially in California. When the Mexican markets can beat the price, it is usually only a couple of bucks per bottle. (5%-8%). My advice, pick up something of high quality that is not yet imported into the states. We came across a few awesome tequilas that you can't get in the states yet. The best tequila liquers are Acquavera, Almendrado, and Don Julio Tequila Crema. Have fun

and drink tons of tequila.

Yes! Thank you! I think that's what hubby's buddy brought back last time and he's been psyched to go get his own bottle.
And we will be drinking MANY tequilas!

Don Julio...........
On my birthday trip last year, the first night, after too many DJ shots to count, my brother got lost on the beach........200 yards from our hotel....
He was found covered in sand (from doing a barrel roll into the ocean) holding on to a trash barrel in the dark. Needless to say, he didn't go on the deep sea fishing trip the next morning.
He just kept saying "Don Julio" in a bad spanish accent, the 200 yards back to our hotel.
Glad he dosen't know about this site. He'd KILL me for telling this story....but hey, what are sisters for?

My friends went in 2002. They also said the bull wasn't there. Maybe it's relatively new? I was there in April '04.
Drunk mechanical bullriding should be an Olympic sport. Good times!

Tulum had one of the most incredible beaches I've ever seen. We took a tour of the ruins and then first saw the beach from a cliff at the end of the tour. Just breathtaking.

My wife and I have been to PDC the last 4 years in a row. The Blue Parrot is ok, but it wasn't as nice this year as it has been the last 3. Too much hip-hop'ish music being played there now. Carols and Charlies can be fun, but we've always considered it to exist more as a restaurant than a bar. We prefere to walk down the hill (towards the Cozumel shuttles) and hang at Senior Frogs. The atmosphere there is better since it sits right on the beach (which comes in handy on those warm evenings after downing a few Sol). If Pata (pronounced PAY-tah) is still tending bar there, ask her if she still has her water gun filled with tequila. It made for an interesting watergun fight at the bar that night! If you make it to Cozumel, you need to rent a VW and drive around the island and stop in at Coconuts. Be sure to check out the photo albums. They don't call it Cocunuts for nothing!

Hope you have a great trip. I know my wife and I always do (at least what we're able to remember of it).
