Not a top of the line sail boat or anything, just a decent one?

let's start with: how big?

My granddad used to build and race his own sailboats in the 16-20 ft range. It probably depends a lot on the materials...Kevlar wasn't real big in his day

I don't have any hands-on experience, but I'm interested in the replies...

I cant imagine it costing too much. If your talking something along the lines of a row boat, it can be built with some simple materials from your local hardware store.

I don't know if I'd be more worried about money or the time it took to build it correctly.

thanks Albatross, I will check that one out.

If I built one it would need to be a little bigger than a rowboat.

Funny you should ask... I'm getting ready to start building one this summer. I've wanted to do this since I was a little kid and was trying to hammer together old pieces of scrap lumber into something that would float (didn't work out too well, then!) :-?

Never done it before, and don't know how to sail, so I'm starting fairly small. It's going to be a 16' wooden runabout powered by an outboard motor.

The plans I'm using date back to the 1950s or 1960s and should give it kind of a classic look. Going to use plywood, mainly because it's simple and this is my first one. Down the road, supposing it goes well, I'd like to build something bigger. :pirate:

There's a lot of info available if you do an online search for boat plans. I've also found a couple of very helpful books on Amazon - search for boats, building, and you should get something good.

PM me if you like, and once I get home, I'll be glad to send you all the specifics about what I've found so far. I think it's going to be cool, although dear wife (I think) may have other opinions. :o

Oh, BTW... I'm expecting to drop between $3000-5000 before it's all said and done. I may be a little optimistic... oh well - some things you just gotta do. 8)

I am a sailor.... Grandpa was a Sea Captain for the DuPonts.... He built a 51' Ketch Kat (3 masts) which took him 5 years (In Mass so the winters were an issue)

Have a friend who build a 31' Island Packet (hull) with a 12' beam in his back yard. Took him three years in Florida.

I know those are big undertakings, but be prepared for alot of elbow grease!

Personally, I bought mine new for 9k in 1986. Catalina 22 w/ roller furling so I could sail it myself. Was too lazy or swayed or something to buy used...but she still is a winner!

Good Luck!

The boat wouldnt be too much money, but it will cost a fortune to buy all those tools Norm uses...

Where's Elrod? Doesn't he have some advice to give...such as "don't build your boat on the second story balcony of an apartment"?
