I was at the beach yesterday enjoying some beautiful weather when I stormed rolled through quickly and i was forced to pack up my stuff in a hurry. My wallet containing my credit cards, and all sorts of ID's was left behind. I will not be able to get a picture ID by the time of the Toronto concert to cross the border into Canada. Do any of you know if the temporary paper ID will work or not, if not this is a bad way to miss a Buffett show!

It looks like you need a photo ID...
http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/reg ... _1170.html
Current Requirements for Entry Into Canada
Visas are not required for U.S. citizens entering Canada from the U.S. You will, however, need:
1. Proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport (For information on obtaining a U.S. passport, check with one of the regional passport agencies located throughout the U.S.) or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate. A driver’s license or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship.
2. photo identification, such as a current, valid driver’s license.
I'm gonna guess you already looked for your wallet...

You can't get a new license by then? Or just a state ID card?

Try this:
http://www.mass.gov/rmv/license/13bMAID.htm
You may apply for a Massachusetts ID at any full service RMV office. You will be given a temporary Mass ID, valid for 30 days, at the branch, and a permanent Mass ID will be mailed to you.

Odds are, someone found the wallet.
You could try posting a reward around that beach, hoping the person who found it is a regular.
If they are nice, they will mail it to you.
Don't laugh....my bud has lost his wallet twice and both times the wallet and license made their way back to him....sans any cash.
Oh, and cancel those cards now if you haven't already, else missing Buffett may be the least of your problems.

Actually, if he had a passport - he wouldn't need the license.

Correct me if I am wrong but I don't believe you need a passport to enter either Canada or Mexico.

that's correct, for now.... within the next year or two, this will change, but right now the requirements are as I posted above.

Nowadays, they like it much better if you do have a passport; it's not for getting into Canada, it's for getting back into the US.

I've been to Canada many times, and all they have ever required was a picture ID and a birth certificate. And on the way back, most of the time they didn't even ask for anything but a picture ID. Although it is always a good idea to have a passport, even if you don't need it.

Passports are preferred, both ways. A driver's license and birth certificate are currently acceptable, both ways, and will remain so for at least another year.
If you can't get photo ID by then, maybe a notarized letter along with every piece of non-photo ID you can find, your concert ticket and maybe a hotel booking confirmation would convince them to let you through.
Besides, how serious a threat is a car full of people in Hawaiian shirts, shark hats and leis?

I dont understand why you cannot obtain a duplicate license before the show? Sure 2-3 hrs in the DMV isnt a fun time...but just get there 30 minutes before they open.... Here in Fl I lost my license once... just took my birth certificate and passprt to DMV. Bada bing bada boom...3 hrs later I had another ugly photo!

An expedited passport through travel.state.gov says it takes two weeks at
http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/fi ... t_831.html , which doesn't help you. But this may
http://www.americanpassport.com/Passport_First.html I have no idea if this service is for real or not, but was a first hit on Google.
Also, passports are not required for Canada until December 31, 2006, but it does speed things up. See
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html
Good luck. I will talk to my wife tomorrow who is our passport expert and see if she knows anymore than I have already stated.

Passport services can turn a passport around in about 72 hours. If you have the time and inclination you can actually go to the Passport Bureau and walk through to get it. It can take up to 8 hours of standing in line but it can be done.

The newer license systems don't spit the license out right there in DMV. You get a picture-less paper "license" and your picture license comes in the mail in about two or three weeks....

I had my wallet stolen about 2 weeks before a ski trip and you can't fly without photo ID (passport was somewhere in else), and I begged DMV to expedite.
I did get new license just before I left

unfortunately, not the case in RI and MA..... you don't get the picture ID for 2-3 weeks....
