Jahfin wrote:I like it a lot but still favor his Whiskeytown work the best. I would like to see Ryan do a record someday devoid of all references to other artists. He's not nearly as derivative of someone like Lenny Krapitz but sometimes I think even a homage to the Grateful Dead like Cold Roses may do him more harm than good in the long run since he is capable of being his own person.
Fins in Low Places wrote:Ryan strikes me as doing whatever he is feeling at the moment. Some have worked out better than others. He lost me a RnR, and not because I don't like the style. The songs just weren't very good imo. I do like the new record after a few listens. I think it could have been condensed to a single disc, but I'm not complaining. And to think, there is more to come.
I like
Rock n' Roll but I take it for what it I believe it was meant to be, a fun record, nothing earth shattering by any stretch of the imagination. One of the harshest criticisms I've seen leveled at him would be that he's a poor self-editor and I believe that to be true myself. Still, I feel some of his best songs are only available on live recordings and haven't made it onto any records (I'm referring here to the
Heartbreaker era songs such as "Hey There Mrs. Lovely", "Petal In A Rainstorm", "Statuettes With Wounds", etc.). I believe
Cold Roses was split into two discs (when they both could have easily fit on one) as a nod to the great two record sets of the 70s. He debuted some new cuts from the other two albums he has coming out this year (
Jacksonville City of Lights and
29) in concert Wednesday night but it's hard to place them in their proper context until I actually hear the records themselves.

I just saw him in concert here on Wednesday for his first NC show since 2000 and he and his new band were on fire. Not sure if you saw my post under the Ryan thread in the Related Artists section but right after his show, he and some former members of Whiskeytown showed up in a local bar for their first performance together since 2000. To say it was a helluva night would be a severe understatement.

The last time Ryan was through here (2000) he threw Whiskeytown back together for a very similar impromptu gig at the Lakeside (now Slim's) so I jokingly made a reference to a potential Whiskeytown show at Slim's following the Meymandi Hall show on a local music listserv I belong to. Who knew it would come true. There were hints but nothing concrete. Following the Meymandi Hall show quite a few of us meandered over to Slim's on the off chance that it might be true. Ryan, Caitlin, Skillet and a couple of members from Ryan's current backing band the Cardinals showed up shortly after midnight and around 1 o'clock they took the stage for about an hour. Here's a link to some photos from the show, you don't have to sign up to see them, just click on the part that says "view photos without signing in":
