Need St Louis Tips - 6/26-29
We've been once before, but wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a family of four... we're staying by LaClede's Landing.
(Did this last year for Louisville, and ended up at a Peter Mayer show!)

St Louis ideas ------ hmmmmmmm
Depnds on age of the phlock, what y'all are into, and what's different than the place that is home.
Lots of stuff to see and do:
Cardinals game
UMB Bank Pavillion concerts --- Chicago with Earth, Wind & Fire, and John Mellencamp with John Fogarty are close to those dates
Gateway Grizzlies minor league baseball game ( lots of fun)
Blueberry Hill eatery (rock & roll memorabilia)
Ted Drewes frozen custard
Dinner on "the Hill"
St. Louis Zoo - great zoo, free admission (pay for parking, train, and about 50 cents for childrens zoo)
Grants Farm - free -tram tour of a wildlife area bison, unique species of deer --- also animal shows, home of the Clydesdales, free AnheuserBusch tasting area
Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton, IL and eagle watching along the Great River Road
Six Flags
Childrens Museum
Art Museum
History Museum
Gateway International Raceway
St. Louis Science Center --- free except Imax theatre
check for shows at the Pagent and Kiel Center

This is the best advice you're likely to get...
Get on I-70 and head east about 7 hours.
I can hear it now...
"Next thing I knew I was on I-70 heading for Pittsburgh!"

Thank you peajay! We planned on the bold items, and will check out some of the others that we missed our last visit.peajay wrote:Depnds on age of the phlock, what y'all are into, and what's different than the place that is home.

As for the Arch suggestion, we went up it when we visited 3 years ago... one and done for this semi-claustrophobic / afraid-of-heights girl!!

Peajay's list really captures a lot of St. Louis stuff. You can also go on the Anheuser Busch brewery tour with complimentary beer (and soda for the kids) at the end of the tour.
One of my favorite places in the city is a best kept secret. It's called City Museum, and not far from the Landing. I was just there on Friday. It is one of the most fun places I've ever been. There's a giant outside climbing area, indoor activity area, manmade caves, aquarium, and all kinds of fun things to do. Here's the website. I highly reccomend it.

It is great---not your granny's museum and very conveniently located from the Landing.
Also don't be put off by any long lines you might see when you first get to Grants Farm. Right after they enter the gate guests board trams to transport them into the grounds. Otherwise, crowds are tolerable. Sometimes there is a bit of a wait to get a table in the Barnhoff area (brats, hotdogs, beverages, etc are available there) or the animal shows fill up quickly sometimes (especially seats in the shade if it is extremely hot).
Don't know which direction you will be travelling from and I haven't seen it yet in person, but I understand the new Lincoln museum in Springfield, IL (about an hours drive) is awesome!!! Interactive and hands-on stuff. It just opened a month or so ago.
Much of St. Louis is about eating. The Landing has a lot of good places to eat, but make sure that you try other places as well. The Hill has tons of great Italian ranging from lower cost Mom & Pop places to much fancier joints. The Soulard District (about 5 minutes drive South of the Landing down Broadway) has a lot of interesting places.
Have a great trip!

There's a great Jimmy Buffett themed bar/restaurant called the "Key Wester" at the Union Station (former train station turned shopping mall) in downtown St. Louis. Lots of Buffett pictures all over the walls and much of his music on the juke box.
The alligator chili is SO hot & spicy, you'll spend the entire next day apologizing to your a-hole. (But it's worth it).

Considering I am going to be there with a buddy of mine in July to collect a game in Busch, I think I found a place for lunch (or dinner after the game)Wino you know wrote:By the third or fourth bowl, the song you'll most likely be thinking about is

Key West is on the lower level of Union Station, definitely worth a visit!
All of the old O.T. Hodge Chile Parlor locations had closed a year ago. There is a new location just opened in one of the suburbs in north county. Get a Slinger - two cheeseburger patties with hash browns and two eggs cooked to order, covered with chili.
The Cardinals will be in town during your visit.
The Zoo is great! If the weather doesn't cooperate, the Science Center is just a little farther east in Forest Park. Both are free (except parking, train ride or IMAX).
Imo's Pizza (many locations) is still my favorite. I haven't found it matched anywhere. Thin crust cut, provel instead of mozzarella and sauce that always tasted a little sweeter than most. Yum!
Garavelli's on Chippewa was my favorite Italian restaurant.
You can drive around the perimeter of Grant's Farm and see a lot of the animals and Grant's cabin. You can park and see the Clydesdale's without actually entering the farm (avoiding the long lines).
Ted Drewes is a must, with or without kids.
Gus's Pretzel's is near the brewery.
Didn't somebody say that St. Louis is all about food? For some reason, food seems to be most of the good memories I have of the years I spent in St. Louis.

It's a fair walk from the stadium to Union Station, or you can ride Metro link and get there in about 3 minutes.RinglingRingling wrote:Considering I am going to be there with a buddy of mine in July to collect a game in Busch, I think I found a place for lunch (or dinner after the game)

We are doing the Metro runs.. altho, for a balding, bespectacled, bearded, pudgy guy, maybe the walk to Union Station would be good. it is only about 9-10 blocks from Busch, and we are staying about a block from the stadium.Elrod wrote:It's a fair walk from the stadium to Union Station, or you can ride Metro link and get there in about 3 minutes.RinglingRingling wrote:Considering I am going to be there with a buddy of mine in July to collect a game in Busch, I think I found a place for lunch (or dinner after the game)
