Jake Shimabukuro to Open for Jimmy

Post by SchoolGirlHeart »

Check it out... in today's Honolulu Star-Bulletin....
Shimabukuro to open for Jimmy Buffett in 7-show tour

At a sold-out Waikiki Shell show in April, singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett invited Hawaii ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro to join him onstage for two encores.

As the crowd cheered after one song, Buffett leaned over to Shimabukuro and said, "Passing the torch, Jake. Now run with it."

The torch passing between the veteran and the virtuoso continues at warp speed this summer when Shimabukuro, 28, will perform onstage with Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band for seven concerts beginning Tuesday in Bristow, Va., through June 30 in Lakeside, Ohio.

"I'm really excited to have Jake out with us," Buffett told the Star-Bulletin yesterday in a telephone interview from New York. "He hasn't any idea what (he's) about to participate in. It's going to be really fun, exposing him to a rather large, new possible fan base."

Technically, of course, it doesn't sound like he's *opening* for Jimmy, but rather *joining* Jimmy onstage for those shows.

What a treat!!! :D

He just won an unprecedented *third* Na Hoku Hanohano award (the Grammys of Hawaiian music).

He's gonna be in Daytona 18-21 July. :D http://www.jakeshimabukuro.com/cgi-bin/ ... &log=20057

If JB meant "passing the torch" literally, as in Jake is his designated heir apparent, then count me out. :x

I listened to some clips of Jake:

http://www.hawaiianmusicstore.com/cds/cd314.html

that were "nice" and no doubt he is talented. But I don't see Jake being the person to whom Buffett fans will flock once (if) Jimmy hangs up doing live shows. I interpret "passing the torch" literally.

Now if he means this as in , "Jacke, it is your time to shine while we are on stage!", well, that I get.

The only reason I parse this statement so literally is that Jimmy Buffett knows what phrases mean, he has certainly written enough songs with cliches in them.

I don't think an easy listening ukukele musician is going to replace Jimmy Buffett. Where are the steel drums in this music, for goodness sakes?!

Lakeside, Ohio -- June 30

Post by Benno123 »

I just want to know why June 30 in Lakeside, Ohio is mentioned! That has to be a mistake, unless they meant Cincy, but there's a 150 mile+ difference between the two places!!!

I'd imagine that what Jimmy meant was a passing of the torch from one musician to another. Jake and Jimmy are obviously different musicians with different styles, but no reason the torch of success can't be passed.

For all of you planning to attend one of these shows, seeing Jake will be a real treat. I was at the Waikiki show, and having never heard of him or never giving a Ukelele any real credit as a legitimate instrument for that matter, didn't expect too much when Jimmy invited him onstage. After hearing him perform......WOW! This Guy is good, Have fun.

Buffett at Lakeside, OH?

Post by parrotheadsherri »

I too am interested if anyone knows where Jimmy may be playing in Lakeside. I'll be hangin' up that way that week and it would be great to catch him if he's gonna be in the area. Just a curious parrothead, any info would be great. :P
