Computer Question

Post by Ilph »

I don't know a whole lot about computers so could someone help me out here? My desktop keeps stalling for a few seconds at a time. It seems the longer the computer's been on, the more it freezes up. So much so, if my computer is on for twelve hours, the clock is over an hour behind due to the freeze ups. How do I fix this?

check to see if everything is seated properly on the board; and get a new, bigger fan to cool the board off. Too, make sure there is plenty of airflow to allow heat exhaust to escape.

Thanks! I just pulled my CPU away from the wall. Hopefully that's all it will take.

I'm on Windows ME. I've done Scandisk, Defrag, and Systems Check. Still having problems, so I'm getting a little worried. Hopefully the airflow is all it takes.

Oh....Best Friend...we need to talk. :o

Windows ME fried my puter. Fried it to the point of having to buy a whole new puter. And the same thing happened to most folks I know who didn't dump ME in time.

ME zaps up all your resources by constantly running background programs you can't see. I could have paid someone a whole lot of money to try to get them off the puter, but it wouldn't have been worth it by the time I added in the cost of XP.

And one of the first signs of trouble? Freezing. :-?

I love my ME.
I don't use any actual "MS" products, like IE or Word or anything.

Run your virus scan and make sure you don't have some weasely spyware/adware crap on there.

uggghh...why?..why?...Why do people still insist on using substandard Operating systems..I don't care what anyone thinks...ME sucks....98 sucks..98 SE sucks. All ME "was" was a pathetic attempt to add some redesigned desktops and some screensavers to Windows 98. Which has to be the worst OS of all time. It mismanages resources so horribly it never should've even been released. 98 blows...period. You can pick up XP from Wal-Mart for a decent price or hell use a friends copy, Microsoft isn't hurting, that's a company I don't feel bad plundering...just switch..it's more secure...makes it much easier on the user..and I promise never again will you see the "Evil Blue Screen Of Death".
All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz & i'm fine

I plan on getting a whole new system in about three months, which is why I'm putting off new a new OS. Trust me, I know ME sucks. I was stupid and thought it was XP when I bought it. I'm an idiot.

The real problem? Turns out the fan on my CPU quit working. :-? I've got to pick up a new one when I get back from Mexico next week. Until then, I have to turn my computer off after every time I use it.

That is a fairly-easy fix. You might also want to look into putting an additional fan in the box as well, most newer cases have two fan holes. The key to making sure the freezes don't happen is to keep the CPU cool. More airflow does that.

I'm getting a new computer in a few months, so I want to sink as little money into this dinosaur as I can. I'm going to hope that just one fan is all I need.

Or if your PC is in a location where it won't get hurt, leave the cover off...you'll need to clean it more often, but it will stay cooler..that's what i've been doing to extend the life of my POS pc...
I know i don't get here quite often enough

Actually, a second fan, if they are in there putting one in as a replacement on the CPU wouldn't be that much.. maybe another $20 bucks.
