Critics Accuse Restaurant's Name Of Being Racist
Donkey Den's Owner Says He Has No Plans To Change Name
DENVER -- A boycott is in the works for a Denver nightclub and restaurant with a catchy, some would say, controversial name.
Donkey Den opened about a month ago in downtown Denver.
The Donkey Den opened just about a month ago at 11th Street and Lincoln Avenue. The restaurant bills itself as a place that brings Tijuana to Denver. Critics say the restaurant takes its name from Tijuana's red light district, an area known for child prostitution. One of the restaurants' drinks shares its name with a slang term for a violent sex act and the club promotes that every shot of Tequila can come with a water back or "wet back," critics say.
"What they may think is a business ploy or funny isn't, especially in a neighborhood that is predominately Latino," said resident Molly Kreck. "When I think of Mexican food, I don't think of underage brothels, abusive sex acts or racism, that's not at all what I think about."
Protesters plan to picket the bar on Saturday night. The owner said he has no plans to change the menu or the restaurant theme.
"We have a great scene here. There is no weird sexual undertone," said the restaurant's owner Tosh Berman. "The fact is we do nothing but try to promote women in this space and try to uplift Denver in itself. I think everyone who comes into this space and sees it and feel it will know that all these accusations are unfounded."
