We did the limbo at my tropical birthday party.
At first I thought it would bomb but everybody did it and it was quite a blast. Nothin' like getting loaded at laughing at the fatties (myself included)
trying to see how low they can go.

A TIKI BAR!!!
Tropical-colored placemats, tablecloths, glasses, straws, etc.
"Palm trees"
Roll a tv/vcr/dvd player where everybody can see it and keep one of Jimmy's videos/dvds in there. (the 2004 MOTM music DVD would work for both sight and sound!)

And by the way, that coconut rum soaked pineapple thing sounds wonderful!!!!

My husband made a giant sizied screen which we hung from our garage last year for our party. He projected JB DVD's and some other stuff on it!!

I also bought some hula hoops, which I also thought would bomb. But they were actually pretty entertaining. One guy who had never hula hooped before was hooping his neck and getting both arms through so the hoop finally ended up around his waist, then knees, then the ground!! Ah, those hidden talents!!

We had some ice cube trays that were parrots also. I saw some at the dollar tree just today that were palm trees.

FinsupinFL (sorry forgot your real name)

We are doing good thanks. Really starting to feel better these days, starting to get out of that first. trimester ickie phase. I just started a new job, so thats been keeping me from BN. Too bad they monitor internet usage tightly there. Otherwise I may not get any work done if I was on BN.

How about SOASOAPT? You could start your own local one.

Tiki Bar wrote:Any insights from experience? My friend and I have some ideas, but I'm sure there's a lot of cool stuff out there that we haven't thought of in the ways of food, drinks, decorations, activities, party favors, etc. I figure there are more experts here, than at the party stores.

In regards to food, any ideas for things that are easy to prepare, and easy to serve? We, as hostesses, want to keep it simple and be able to mingle and enjoy ourselves, rather than slave in the kitchen or at the grill all day. And our husbands continue to repeat "it's your party"!

Any and all suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

In the past, we've used (new and clean) little beach pails and shovels to hold and serve salsa and nachos. For quick food, try roll-ups: soft tortilla shells spread with cream cheese and add your choice of ingredients (green pepper or, for a more tropical atmosphere, pineapple and/or mango) then roll 'em up and slice 'em into inch thick slices.

If you've got kids in attendance, here's a fun game: Divide the kids into two teams. Get the teams into two lines at one end of the yard. At the other, place two chairs and on those chairs, place "beach" items like a beach ball, flippers, sandals, etc. When you say "go", the first kid from each team runs to the chair and grabs one item (putting it on, if applicable) and then runs back to his team where he passes the item to the next kid, who puts it on and then runs back to the chair and grabs a second item. Repeat the process until the last kid has all of the items. His job is to run to the chair and drop all the stuff onto it. We've had a blast doing that with 10 kids between about 4 and 12.

For the grownups, you can play a Buffetized version of the Newlywed Game, with questions like: "Who's the bigger Buffett fan: you or your significant other?", "Where/when was your first Buffett concert together?", "What's your significant other's favourite Buffett song?" etc. (Obviously, this works better with diehard fans.)

Have fun!

Rite Aid has had a lot of parrot themed stuff, serving plates, cups, trays etc. All pretty cheap. If there is one close to you check it out.
