2005 US Open
Well the US Open returns to the scene of one of the most memorable final rounds in Open history as Payne Stewart came from behind in the final three holes at Pinehurst #2, architect Donald Ross' masterpiece, to beat expectant father Phil Mickelson in 1999.
Payne Stewart tragically lost his life four months later in a plane crash, and his statue stands outside the 18th Green depicting his reaction after sinking a 15 foot putt to win the championship.
Pinehurst #2, known as the Cathedral of Pines, is best known for its long Par 4's and elevated greens in which balls will roll off the green and collect down in a valley. It should be a fun weekend for golf fans everywhere.

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

Payne Stewart's funeral i can still see it in my mind with Paul Azinger giving the eulogy. He Tucked his paints into his pants and put on the fadora. And the Eulogy. It brought tears to my eyes

That was at Pebble beach where they all lined up and hit balls into the ocean in tribute.that first round was very touching. Also i remember a story of Azinger and i'm not sure who was with him . taking a bottle of Krystal and sitting on the ledge drinking with and toasting there lost friend.Duff wrote:The Scottish fellas in kilts walking into the morning fog and finally disappearing, leaving only footprints in the fairway dew all while playing the bagpipes still sends shivers up my spine.
I'm pulling for Freddie, had a good first round.

I'm pulling for Phil, who's at -1 and within striking distance, and Jim Furyk, one of the 2nd tier players on TOUR but a real hard worker. Another guy I like is Luke Donald from England.

Tiger did pretty good today but his shirt burned my retinas. He's got to lay off the hot pink.

Did anyone catch the story of Jason Gore.
He was a member of the Pepperdine National Championship team in 1997, I believe, and a member of a Walker Cup team.
On the day of his first pro tournament in Boise, his mother finds his father dead of a heart attack.
Tomorrow, he'll be in the final pairing on Father's Day.
Then his car stereo and his wife's clothing is stolen after he arrives in Pinehurst this week.
I really like "The Goose" as he is one of the most hard-working, underrated, and under-appreciated guys on Tour, but tomorrow I'll be rooting for Jason Gore

And so will I. Even a second or a third will cut a big enough check to make to weekend worthwhile. What a tough round he had today. A real fighter he is.jonesbeach10 wrote:Did anyone catch the story of Jason Gore.

Yes, off to a rough start.A little adrenaline going at the start.Hopefully he can settle down and make a charge . If he wins it would be a great fathers day storyLeft Field ParrotHead wrote:And so will I. Even a second or a third will cut a big enough check to make to weekend worthwhile. AND THE WINNER IS:
Michael Campbell, of New Zealand. (sorry creeky, right region, wrong island
)
Campbell played a great back 9 to hold off a chraging Tiger.
Jason Gore ended up shooting 84 today and ended up in 48th place
.
Not much better, Goosen shot 81 and finished way back as well on a day where #2 played bery tough.
So the golfing world shifts from possibly the greatest test of American golf to the toughest test of British golf where it all began, THE OLD COURSE at St. Andrews.
