My dad got his (the one I use) at Sam Ash for about $350 (insurance paid for it I believe as the old one got hit by lightning).

I find that some electronics stores sell them as they are coming back into style. They had some nice RCA cd/turntable combos for less than $200. Some stores that sell vinyl also sell record players.

Try going to Froogle and search using the keywords "phonograph" and "turntable". The results are linked below, I got more hits by searching for "turntable".
Phonograph:

Turntable:

I recently saw a two turntable DJ set up in Circuit Sh*tty but that's the only time I've seen a turntable in a store in recent memory. I've been buying a lot of new vinyl lately so I'm in dire need of a turntable myself but I'm not going to make that investment until I'm on higher ground away from Hurricane country (coastal NC).

Does anyone else remember that when Hot Water came out, there was a flyer/insert included for a contest to attend a "Private Jimmy Buffett Concert on Private Island"?
Obviously I mailed it in and entered but I never heard or saw anything further about that contest.
Does anyone else remember this? I've asked a lot of people and I appear to be the only one who remembers this. I need confirmation that I'm not starting to lose my mind.

Yep, I remember it. I'm not sure what ever became of it though. That'd be another good question for the
Ask Jimmy feature that was running at Margaritaville.com for a while.

Why were you using the record player outside during a thunderstorm?

Thanks Jahfin. I knew I wasn't losing my memory. The other thing I remember so well about the
Hot Water album was the shock of seeing a clean shaven Jimmy on the cover for the first time.

Thanks for all the input guys! I'll have to go out and look at some turntables.
I went to a used record shop today (I didn't buy anything) and they were sold out of Buffett. They had a copy of James Taylor's 'Gorilla' for $3 and quite a bit of Van Morrison. The copies of 'Moondance' and 'His Band' were $8 a piece and the vinyl looked brand new.
I was definetly surprised at the new vinyl prices. Van's 'Pay the Devil' was $12.99 while Neil Young's 'Prarie Wind' was $37.99.
Parrot Monkey, do you still need a copy of Gorilla on vinyl? I'd be happy to get that one for you and ship it your way if you need it. I've got no problem spending $3 for a fellow parrothead.

I had some time today so I did a "sweep" at a local antique mall. One of the best in a long time. For $3 each I collected:
Living and Dying in 3/4 Time
Volcano
Last Mango
OPH
A1A
Somewhere over China
All have the origional sleeves and all are in very good condition.
I'm a happy boy,
John

I had to go back to the above shop to pick something up for a friend and found:
SOASOAS
Coco Tele
Again $3 with origional sleeves.

Nice finds. Especially being able to locate the vinyl editions before MCA got their paws on 'em.

Even though I have Jimmy's entire catalog on CD and most of the music
on my laptop and MP3 player, I still like to sometimes listen to the older
stuff on vinyl. It just sounds so warm. It's like a time machine. Theres
just something romantic and cool about. Like others on this post I would
recommend it to anyone that hasn't tried it. I haven't had much luck
finding LP's anywhere other that e-bay. It seems like with shipping I'm
paying around $8-12 per record. This is a little more than some of you
lucky peeps but still well worth it. As a bonus the cover art and liner notes
are a lot of fun as well. Like Jah says try to get your paws on the
ABC/Dunhill stuff.

The sound aside, as has been said before, the origional art and liner notes on LPs are worth the price.
Good luck in your hunt!

Don't you all think it would have been a lot easier buying the records when they actually came out?

Sure, if you were ALIVE at the time!

Circuit City has a small selection of turntables. They even have one that will convert your LPs to digital, record it onto a cd. There is also equipment out there that you can run your turntable thru to the computer and onto cd.
