Very Sad
I was about 30 miles away in Panama City Beach Saturday when it happen. There were tons of fish and Sting Rays schooling around us in only a few feet of water. When there are that many fish schooling close in, you have to be on the look out for bigger things that may be hunting them.
They were way too far out! If you go past the first sand bar you are no longer on the beach. Sharks hunt around the sand bars all the time because they are able to run their pray close to them a corner them.

My Ex and our 11 year old son were at Ft. Walton for the past 1 1/2 weeks. They came home the day after this happened.
Same thing: they told me that all week, there were schools of sting rays swimming right by, within feet of my son, and that his dad saw a couple sharks nearby but as it was my son telling me, I didn't catch how close to them the sharks were.
Very sad and very scary.

Yeah... the attack was about a half mile down from where we are in my avatar and sig pics
and this pic was taken on Sunday about a 1/4 mile away...
and this one here with the heroic surfer being interviewed... well, lets just say that I know those blue chairs and umbrellas well... the area behind him is the only stretch of open roadside beach access along Old Hwy 98... runs East of The Whales Tail, my favorite beach bar and across the street from our resort - this is where we always are... and were - it's "technically" Miramar Beach... pretty much it is the fine line that seperates Destin and Sandestin...
things are not looking good for this season... and with the 4th this weekend - Hope we're not looking at another
These events wont keep me away in the future... as everyone can see, the beaches and water are beautiful...
Just have to stay alert and aware, use common sense, act responsibly and give the salty waters the respect they deserve... do that and people should be fine!

I think the point of fishing is to "lure" them in... not run 'em off

I figured that we could have a foot race. Last one to the finish line is the bait. Are you in?

Bingo! All those fish might be pretty to look at, but they are lunch for something bigger. Same with the rays. Hammerheads eat stingrays. Bull sharks eat other sharks. So adding humans to a school of fish or rays can be a recipe for disaster.

Over The Top...
I'll even bring my "truckers" ball cap with the mesh so I can turn it around right before I lay the smack down on you

Thats the nice thing about the Gulf though... most days visibility is good in the water and you can see whats around you...
Not like that in the Atlantic... you dont know it's there until you feel it
