Some good info here...but they forgot the most important ones...be informed and pay attention.
Although the chances of shark attack are slight, swimmers can reduce the risk by:
• Staying out of the water at dawn and dusk, when sharks are feeding
• Avoiding murky waters to reduce the possibility of a shark confusing swimmers for their usual prey
•Swimming in groups because sharks are more likely to attack solitary individuals
• Removing jewelry, because it can reflect light in the same way that a fish's scales would

On Sunday we were hanging out with a local (lived there 20 yrs) family, the father had been out on the first sandbar diving for sand dollars when he came rushing back to shore. He said a Hammerhead about 8ft long swam by him about 3ft away.
Yeah... I'd say that video was pretty much what he saw... face to face

yep and where were the parents ?
THANK YOU!!! This is what I've been thinking all along...and now a boy has been attacked 80 miles away and lost his leg....tragic. Not that Mom being right there could have stopped a shark but no one has mentioned where her, or his parents were.

Some here have suggested the bar...
And No... there's prolly nothing they could have done from the shore except never allowed the girls to go out that far in the first place... hmm... there's a thought... why didnt they think of that???

we know the parents in charge have to be mortified over this... BUT if it had been one of my girls in their care... I would be asking these same questions... and wanting these same answers... only, I wouldnt be this nice about it

Thats the nice thing about the Gulf though... most days visibility is good in the water and you can see whats around you...
Not like that in the Atlantic... you dont know it's there until you feel it :o

That is not quite true at all!!! It depends how close to the gulfstream and the weather. I have been on a few beaches on the east coast and excellent viz.

I have seen aerial footage from numerous beaches ( and even offshore here) where there were hundreds or more sharks. This is nothing new. Have someone take you ion a small plane and overfly just offshore. Particularly near sounds ( the river sounds not music or noise sounds) if possible video tape it....you just might reconsider what you think about sharks and wonder why there are only so few attacks and why aren't there many more.
I am quite surpised and amazed, there WAS ONLY ONE shark in that pic.
http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/Sharks/ISAF/ISAF.htm has the best info and documentation on shark attacks!!!
Peter Benchly gave the shark more reason to fear us, than we have to fear the shark!!! We do more harm by far to sharks and are over fishing them at horrendous rates. Sharks are immune to almost all known disease among being the perfect eating machine. As I posted elsewhere, there are well over 340 documented species of sharks, less than 40 are known to attack humans and most are quite harmless.... such as the whale shark... the largest known species of sharks only eats plankton...only damage it might unintentionally cause, is when you crash your boat into it.......

This girl's family and friends and the boy who lost his leg and his family and friends do have my empathy.

I don't know... it's better than being door mats in 1A, and it hasn't been all that long since ID was playing 1AA
