Friday Night with Jerry Jeff Walker

Post by springparrot »

Friday night, Jump Up (Carol) and I went to see Jerry Jeff at Sam Houston Race Park in Houston. He didn't start playing until all the horse races were over--about 11 PM, but the show was well worth waiting for. :D
He played for 2 hours, didn't take a break and played most of his great songs.

The music was great, but the crowd wasn't as much as fun.
There were all sorts of "characters" there.
One large woman was up dancing during about every song. That isn't bad, but she had no visible means of support  :o
She was drinking lots of beer, but at least it was LITE beer :P

And the guy behind us yelled for JJ to sing Little Bird between every song and was having a great time playing air guitar.

I was almost embarassed for JJ to see the crowd, but finally decided he had seen much worse.

He sang, in no particular order:
Redneck Mother
London Homesick Blue
Mr. Bojangles
Trashy Women
LA Freeway
Don't It Make You Want To Dance
Woman in Texas
The Cape
Pick-up Truck song
Navajo Rug
I know there are others, I just can't think tonight.

Here a link to a few of my pics. The 35mm are better, but I haven't scanned them yet.

I'm sure Carol will have other stories and pictures. :D

JJW v his fans

Post by Goodman »

As the man with the best known cover of Up Against the Wall RedNeck Mother, JJW was certainly a man as rowdy as his 1970's fans. In the few short years I've been privileged to see him (1999-) live at the Bowery Ballroom & BBKings in NYC, I'd say that life, family (Susan), and middle age have left him a bit lest bellicose. The best word to describe him IMHO is avuncular.

His younger, rowdier and more lubricated fans seem to think/hope he's the JJW who sang p*** in the Wind. He no longer is.

The first time I saw him at Bowery Ballroom (after Cowboy Boots n Bathin Suits)some of the younger Texas transplants seemed more interested in singin his songs than JJW did. He dedicated Allright Guy to them and moved the show forward. A true pro.

Till next time.

I love going to JJW concerts, it's like Forrest Gump said "...you never know what you're going get." There were some real interesting CHARACTERS. It was Biker night at the track, so when we got there we did not know what to expect from our two wheeled friends. As it turned out, they were the best behaved group in the audience. They sat quietly drinking the place dry. Cheered at the end of the song and clapped when JJW started a new song.

The worst behaved were the Trail Park Trash. Molly mentioned the one who sat behind me, the "Whistler". Even her kid asked her to stop and she not only yelled at me that she would not stop, she yelled at her kid. She would whistle at the beginning, middle and end of every song. And her big fat obnoxious husband wasn't any better. He kept yelling Little Bird. I yelled one time "shut up" and that started a bunch of other people yelling shut up.

Some in the crowd were dancing in the isles, which was great. They did not block anyone’s view of the stage. Although when one person in particular got up to dance all eyes were on her. As Molly said she had “no visible means of support.” It looked like “two pigs fighting under a blanket.”

I’ve seen JJW with the band and solo. I like the energy of the concert with the band, but I also like the story telling of the solo concerts. Last Friday night he tried to tell a story about a song, but “Little Bird” behind me drowned him out. He did not tell any more stories. I love knowing the background of song, it some how gives it more meaning.

In addtiton to the songs Molly listed he also played:

It Don't Matter
Little Old Town Called New Orleans
Alright Guy
Let The Ponies Run
Texas On My Mind
The Other Jerry Jeff

And much to “Little Birds” chagrined he did not play Little Bird.
It's a jungle out there kiddies; Have a very fruitful day.

Great account of the show. I've learned as many JJW fans know that he don't take requests. Atleast, not officially. :-)

My best JJW remembrance was the first time I saw him-NYC at the Bowery Ballroom. The fans were a bit rowdier than JJW liked, Django was there with I believe Cosmic Bob. I was new to JJW having found Cowboy Boots courtesy of the Church of Buffett. It didn't look like he was gonna do anything from the one CD I had. I yelled out Boats to Build just as he launched into the song. I hope I never forget that.

Thanks Carol for adding to the review....I'm pretty sure I'm still deaf from the Whistler

Everyone was rolling their eyes and glaring at the couple behind us and laughing out loud at the Dancing Queen :P But I guess that was part of the show--I think even Jerry Jeff was laughing at the dancer.

Even with all the distractions, JJ put on a great show with LOTS of energy. It was a beautiful night for a show in Houston (in the 80's wth little humidity), but the band was working hard and sweating big time. Everyone on stage kept walking over and kicking the fans trying to get them aimed in the right direction.

btw--He is coming back to Houston October 13 and last time I checked, there were still great tickets available.
