Jimmy helping the Cubbies?????????
This is from a story on CBS.sportsline.com about possible trades at the trading deadline. Hell he helped out Sox break the curse, maybe he is trying to spread some good vibes Chicago's way.
Chicago Cubs: What a boost they've gotten this week with both Mark Prior and Kerry Wood returning to the rotation. Suddenly, the Cubs are four games over .500 (40-36 at midweek) and heading north.
Derrek Lee can't be expected to carry things all summer, and they'd like to add some offense. They've spoken with Colorado about Wilson, Tampa Bay about Aubrey Huff and undoubtedly will talk with Cincinnati about Adam Dunn, whom the Reds are shopping.
The key for the Cubs will be finding a player match with whomever they target -- and the Cubs have a deep farm system, so they've got that going for them -- because they should have extra funds thanks in part to ... yes, Buffett.
Seriously. The President/CEO of Parrothead Nation is playing Wrigley Field on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5 and 6, and the Cubs expect to clear a couple million bucks from the shows. Here's the key: Because it is not a baseball activity, that money goes straight into the Cubs' pockets without baseball taking a cut for revenue sharing or luxury tax.
Thus, the Cubs will have plenty of extra mad money to toss around as the summer heats up and things get serious.

Cubs are helpless
Obtaining the National League wild card is the only way the Cubs are even going to reach the playoffs. They will never catch St. Louis. The Cardinals are twice the team the Cubs are even with the glass armed duo of Wood and Prior. The Cards have better pitching , fielding and hitting. So Jimmy play well in Chicago but leave no magic mojo in Wrigley. War Cardinals !!

Ha! Can he play Yankee Stadium and donate a decent starting pitcher instead of the $$$
Or I don't mind the $$$ if it won't be going to teams that don't use the money they get from revenue sharing, aka the Devil Rays.

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

I could have my relatives (of which there are several) hunt you down in that town...but then they're probably Cardinal's fans, too.Ilph wrote:I don't know if I can go as far as to say it's a good cause, but I'll agree it's a hopeless one.Quiet and Shy wrote:Nice to know I've contributed to a good (albeit historically hopeless) cause. No matter, that will be way too late for the Cubs to make it to the playoffs.LIPH wrote:The Cubs are beyond help. And aren't the Chicago shows Sept. 4 & 5, not 5 & 6? At least that's what my tickets say.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Re: Cubs are helpless
If you look at the trend, you almost want to be the wild-card. The last two-three years, it wasn't the team that clinched the division in early Sept. that made it to the top of the heap. Only other scenario, would be two teams fighting it out into the last week of the season, and the division championship being decided in one of their home parks... Otherwise, it almost seems like the wild-card team is the young, hungry one going for the fat, bloated, slow-moving... (insert any other joke about George Steinbrenner here)Bora Bora wrote:Obtaining the National League wild card is the only way the Cubs are even going to reach the playoffs. I think we can eliminate the Pirates... just a feeling.CaptainP wrote:I've used this analogy before....
Buffett plays Fenway in 2004, they win the series.
So, this year, I guess the Cubs will win the series? So will the Phillies! And the Pirates! Gonna be one heck of an October!!!!

Re: Cubs are helpless
at this rate it looks like the yankees arent even gonna make the playoffs, all those players (except jeter and a LIMITED group of others) are content to play half ass and collect their twenty mill a season, personally im hoping that the sox clinch the AL east and we have two teams for from the centeral and one from the west... but than we do lose the great sox yanks series in octoberRinglingRingling wrote:If you look at the trend, you almost want to be the wild-card. I hate the yankees as much as the next guy. But with that stated, I would not count them out just yet. Playoffs without the yankees would be great. We can only hope so!!!
Since I'm going to the Wrigley, I guess I could root for the Cubs.
I still plan to go sit in the Bartman seat. Sorry Cub fans.
