No, I don't because in this instance they're two entirely different things. Buffett's stage is populated by dancers, props, etc. while all Stipe did was wear some make up on his face.Tiki Bar wrote:Going another direction, and honestly not looking for an argument, just an honest response from Jahfin. You chalk it up to theatrics, yet you have stated in the past that you wish Jimmy would get away from the theatrics in concert, and just play his music. Do you hold the same thoughts for REM, or are you ok with the Cat Burglar makeup on tour and at the Live 8 thing? (And I guess past tours too, whatever the significance of the previous makeup has been.)DsilCaribe wrote:***- what is up with Michael Stipes blue paint?? does that have any significance??
Under what reasoning? Is it your perception that one stripe across Michael Stipe's face was so distracting that it took away from the cause at hand? What if the artist in question was Kiss, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, etc.? Should they also been expected to perform without their make up for fear someone in the audience might become distracted and totally forget why they were all there? I think not. What about Pink Floyd? What if they had decided to perform songs from The Wall and were accompanied by the props they've used when performing that piece in the past.Tiki Bar wrote:For the record, I, like many of the viewers, would have no idea why he was blue, and I wonder if it might have been better to play "unmasked" for this event.
At least I provided an actual answer rather than trying to sidestep the question. What exactly is it that you people want? The same ol' lighthearted BS that people offer up on this site when something serious arises? God forbid someone should actually attempt to answer one of your questions. At least I've tried.Tiki Bar wrote:Sounds a lot better than "On the tour for Around the Sun Stipe is portraying the Cat Burglar from one of the songs on the new album."LIPH wrote:Now I see the light. I think the difference is that even people who know very little about KISS, Alice Cooper or Motley Crue would expect them to perform in character. The same goes for Pink Floyd and using props for The Wall. I've never been a fan of any of those acts but I've always known about them and what their performances were like. I'm not sure casual fans, or non-fans, of REM are aware of the significance of the paint. And I think the discussion that's gone on here proves that point. I'd be willing to bet just about everyone knows about KISS, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue and Pink Floyd. You're the only one who had a clue about the blue paint on Stipe's face. Just because you're a fan of an act and have an encyclopedic knowledge of their history doesn't mean everyone else does.Jahfin wrote:Under what reasoning? Perhaps but one stripe across a singer's face is not reason to believe that it would detract from Live 8 itself. Again, you have to give the audience more credit than you're allowing because in addition to their Live 8 appearance they have been on tour in Europe all summer and even played an additional date following their performance at Live 8.LIPH wrote:I think the difference is that even people who know very little about KISS, Alice Cooper or Motley Crue would expect them to perform in character. all I can say is this: When we saw REM perform on TV, all that myself and the others with me could think was "why the hell is that guy painting half his face blue?" and throughout that entire performance, we werent paying attention to the music or the cause, only the reasoning behind the blue paint.Jahfin wrote:

The key word here is "we". That doesn't speak at all to the over all viewing audience that was tuned in. If you are that easily distracted by a little make up I hate to think what would have happened if Tammy Faye Baker had put in an appearance.DsilCaribe wrote:all I can say is this: When we saw REM perform on TV, all that myself and the others with me could think was "why the hell is that guy painting half his face blue?" and throughout that entire performance, we werent paying attention to the music or the cause, only the reasoning behind the blue paint.Jahfin wrote:

Just cuz many of us would wonder why the little bald dude's face was blue. Maybe it was intentional marketing, so ignorant idiots asking the question would seek out info on REM, and maybe make a purchase?Jahfin wrote:Under what reasoning?Tiki Bar wrote:For the record, I, like many of the viewers, would have no idea why he was blue, and I wonder if it might have been better to play "unmasked" for this event.
