Re: Stipe at "Live 8" Where Do These Idiots Come From?
I saw similar comments on the Manics forum but after I explained the lyrical tie-in & that he's been doing it all tour & had a gig later the same day, the folks questioning it seemed to chill...

You might not have said it, but I'm beginning to think you sent me a subliminal message of your new avatar:Jahfin wrote:Where did I say he "wore makeup on an album cover"? DAMN!!! Uh, excuse me. I'll be back in 2 - 3 minutes....rednekkPH wrote:Can you blame him?LIPH wrote:Now I see the light. We're talking about Smurfette now.

Im sure most others who arent all that familiar with REM were thinking the same thing as me. Its very reasonable to be distracted by a short bald man wearing blue makeup all across his face. . . dont tell me if u saw someone like that in public u'd wouldn't be distracted!Jahfin wrote:The key word here is "we". That doesn't speak at all to the over all viewing audience that was tuned in. If you are that easily distracted by a little make up I hate to think what would have happened if Tammy Faye Baker had put in an appearance.DsilCaribe wrote:all I can say is this: When we saw REM perform on TV, all that myself and the others with me could think was "why the hell is that guy painting half his face blue?" and throughout that entire performance, we werent paying attention to the music or the cause, only the reasoning behind the blue paint.Jahfin wrote:
Under what reasoning? Is it your perception that one stripe across Michael Stipe's face was so distracting that it took away from the cause at hand?

Come on people just leave michael stipe alone.....he and his bandmates were just trying to do good. i was really annoyed when i read a post about him and it mentioned his sexuality-that has nothing to do with it! the guys in r.e.m. dont mean to annoy you so just leave it!

So now Stipe is a freak just because he wears a stripe across his face in concert? You're lack of acceptance of anyone different than you is probably more of an indication that you're the freak and a closed-minded one at that.PHBeerman wrote:Hey it's Batboy.Finsupinfla wrote:

Actually I shouldn't insult Batboy by comparing him to that freak.
It's just a matter of stage theatrics, nothing more, nothing less. Read more into it if you will (and I'm sure you will because you apparently don't have anything better to do than stir up sh*t).PHBeerman wrote:The paint is not the only thing that makes him a freak I am sure. But it sure helps prove the point.
