This might not be what you had in mind, but the Riviera Maya in Mexico (which is the only beach I've ever been to) was absolutely fabulous and totally keet friendly. We didn't take them, but are dying to go back so we can.
We stayed at a resort called Barcelo Maya. They had great food (it's all inclusive), two awesomely huge pools, beautiful beach, a kids club...and endless things to do.
It was also VERY affordable.
My very lovely travel agent (also a BNr) is NJPhinPhan and I'm sure she'd love to help you out!

by the Bahamas, do you mean the big islands? If so, consider checking out the out islands. Namely the Abacos. My parents have a place on Great Guana Cay ... quiet, lots of snorkeling/diving and great for families (aside from the pig roast at Nippers on Sunday ... lottssss of silicone). Not yet overdeveloped and gorgeous.
As far as the USVI, when i was a kid I always loved Maho Bay on St. John - it felt like you were camping, great views and lots of activities.

You say that like it's a bad thing... and now they use saline. It's more environmentally-friendly.

I did spend one afternoon barefoot man concert dancing with Heidi Fleiss and her "girls." Apparently they ship them in every year for the 'foot concert. I didn't know until one of the locals told me. Go to
www.nippersbar.com and click on photo albums.
To the OP, though, the rest of the week (and sundays in the slower seasons), it's very family friendly.
