Stove Preference

Post by buffettbride »

I seem to be in a kitchen appliance mood...

I LOVE cooking on a gas stove. :D :D :D Had one once in an apartment and haven't been able too cook on electric since. The coil types seem to burn stuff quicker and the porcelain tops stay hot for too long and are hard to clean.

Gas allows me to not burn the hell out of instant mashed potatoes by giving me a more "visual" perspective of how much heat is coming out.

I am into the new duel-fuel option... the gas top and the electric oven... but now that I re-read the subject line I am assuming you were talking just about the top.... oops... I guess then gas is the answer.

This poll just means the top, but I do like the same as you. Gas up top with the electric oven on bottom.

My limited cooking skills are further limited to a gas stove.

Gas....cooks more even and better to control the heat.

My last stove was the electric glass top and sure, it looked great, but I hated cooking on it. Not to mention I couldn't use a cast iron skillet to fry stuff or I'd scrape the surface all to hell

I would prefer Gas, I cook in a wok 3 to 5 meals a week. Electric just doesn't work well

That being said, we have had electric for the last 14 years, so I guess my opinion matters as much at home as it does here

We bought our house "used."
The original owners installed a gas furnace, gas water heater, gas fireplace, gas dryer...
and an electric stove.

(freaks!)

I must say, though, that I don't have much trouble keeping the smooth porcelain top clean. It's much easier for me that electric coils, or even gas burners.

But I'd rather cook over a gas flame any day.

Probably way more than anyone cares to know, but:

I have a big preference to gas top, but when we bought our current house, I apparently had a lapse in sanity and got a smooth glass top electric stove.

I do not recommend this if you are an avid cooker for a couple of reasons I found out the hard way. Once you get something cooked into the glass (burned in, caked on, etc.), it is an absolute b*tch to get out. the glass top cleaners have never worked for me, elbow grease, nothing, which bugs me to no end because I'm anal retentive about cleanliness.

Gas is just far better for control, as aready said. The glass top I have regulates itself, and there's no way to turn that off.

Plus after a couple of years, even if you haven't managed to burn anything into it, it's no longer smooth. It wears and gets a sort of granite type feel to it over where the burners off.

I can't wait to get a new stove (which will unfortunately mean putting a gas line in for it :( ).
Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all..
