Police: Coach paid kid to hurt disabled teammate

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A T-ball coach allegedly paid one of his players $25 to hurt an 8-year-old mentally disabled teammate so he wouldn't have to put the boy in the game, police said Friday.

Mark R. Downs Jr., 27, of Dunbar, is accused of offering one of his players the money to hit the boy in the head with a baseball, police said. Witnesses told police Downs didn't want the boy to play in the game because of his disability.

Unfortunatly this type of behavior and prejudice against those with disabilities is rampant throughout the country. Most of these people have no voice in Washington, unlike African-Americans, homosexuals, and other groups. I feel it is our duty to protect the weak and disabled. If you see it happen make a stand and help to end this horrible treatment.

This guy should be saying his prayers that I wasn't around for this...because he'd have a Louisville Slugger embedded in HIS skull.

I've spent my entire career working in Special Ed. NOBODY messes with my kids. And my school they know if they do and I find out, they are in BIG GIANT TROUBLE. :x  :x  :x

God help our kids if this is a common attitude in coaching. What ever happened to "for love of the game" and "sportsmanship"? :-?

I wonder if we could get pay the kid to throw baseballs at the coach's head and how many of us would contribute for him to do so......okies that might traumatize someone..... maybe we could all pay for US to throw baseballs at the coach.......

What a BLEEPING POS! WHY was he allowed around children? I hope he catches fastballs in his crotch!!! Would be nice to have stand in front of one of those ball throwing machines.....How far would $20.00 worth of balls hitting him last before he fell out?

I couldn't even imagine, when I coach both, baseball and football I try and give each player a fair amount of playing time no matter if they are disabled, or have a smaller athletic talent then the other play.

That guy will get what he deserves

Kath, I hear you, BIG time. Working in the field with special needs youth, we become their mentors and advocates. I couldn't even read the article all the way through.

The coach needs to be educated.

among other things, he should never be allowed near a kids' sporting event EVER again.... even as a spectator for his own kids' games....
