Which do you think it would take longer to cover?
So would it take longer to touch every square inch of the planet Earth or visit every webpage on the internet?
What would everyone guess on this? I don’t have any scientific facts here or don’t know if anyone else does. Just though it would be a neat idea to see what people estimate the size of the World Wide Web compared the world itself.
I say the net.

Another thing to remember that visiting each square inch of the planet requires much more physical movement then surfing the net, which you can do just sitting in a chair. Going to each spot on the earth will require you do stop and rest quite often, while sitting in a chair you can sit there much, much longer then you could walking…

Considering the problems associated with getting to some very very very difficult locations in this world, Mt. Everest for one. and the fact that "every square inch" would include the walls of places like the Grand Canyon, I believe it would take longer then the internet.

now add in the amount of vertical topography earth has, and the number of square inches really goes up....land_shark3 wrote:Well from some research, Google indexes roughly 1,326,920,000 pages.
The Earth has a surface area of 196,935,000 sq miles or 790,593,509,375,999,872 sq inches.
I'm going with the Earth.

You have completely ignored/over looked "The DEEP WEB" aka "THE HIDDEN WEB".
Most people are not even aware of "The Deep Web"/ "The Hidden Web"'s existance.
The Deep/Hidden Web is really there. It actually contains databases, and it is more technical and requires a bit of learning to surf. Usually places like libraries, universities and colleges, research centers, or state or other "tech" or professional entities utilize it.... It is designed in a way that most search engines will skip it entirely.
There are Deep/Hidden sites out there that do require people to pay to have access or must be a student or an employee, etc.
Estimates of the size of the Deep Web are as much as 550 times or more the size of the "web" as we know it.
Don't believe the Deep Web exists??? Do a search on your favorite search engine or dogpile.com for deep web.
Or go here: http://www.brightplanet.com/technology/deepweb.asp
There are many other sites to utilize for info. Some of the deep web sites are free... give them a try.
Happy Surfing!
I would definitely say the web would take longer to cover....It seems beyond the bounds of ever being able to cover the net due to the growth and fluctuations... that is unless there is a massive power failure and the whole web goes down.... then in that event I have o go with the earth....

I haven't had enough to drink yet, but technically the Earth is not constant. The surface area changes with every volcano, earthquake, and erosion.Sam wrote:The earth is not expanding and is a given constant....
At one point in time, there was no Hawaii. The volcanos exploded and created more surface area. At another point in time, the was no Grand Canyon. The river has created another great deal of surface area on the walls of the Grand Canyon.
I will agree that the Earth is not growing as fast as the Internet, but it is not a constant size.
Now where did I put that drink....

Techically you are right.... The surface of the earth is subject to change for many different reasons, but the mass itself of the earth is not expanding. I am talking of the planet as a whole...not just the land mass.land_shark3 wrote:I haven't had enough to drink yet, but technically the Earth is not constant. Has the diameter or circumference of the earth changed ??? Even with Continental Drift?
I would still have to say that the earth is a relative constant in this.
The earth as a whole planet, is not growing in mass or size that I can see...
At least I would not see how.... the land masses and waterways change shape and form through erosion, earthquakes, wind, storms, currents, and such. We have the land at the bottom of the oceans to consider as well with the volcanoes and black smokers and what not.
Here let me hand you a drink
