It's the quiet ones we should be most worried about. :o :o :o

As for a woman's right to choose, this is what I have to say...If men could get pregnant, abortion would be sacred.

To make sure you don't think I'm a bleeding-heart liberal (which I absolutely am NOT), when I got pregnant with my daughter at 22 her sperm-donor (to put it kindly) was BEGGING me to have an abortion and I didn't because it's MY body and MY choice. My daughter is not 1/2 him and 1/2 me; she is her own person. It's my job on this great green Earth to raise her well enough that she can live life successfully on her own one day. I do not OWN her.

Abortion is not an issue to be taken lightly and I would gladly encourage just about any woman who is facing that decision to NOT do it, simply based on my personal experiences, myself included, and friends who have and friends who haven't had abortions.

With that said, I'll be keeping my eye on this Roberts dude, but overall I really think it's too bad that we've allowed ourselves in this country to become so distraught over "right" and "left" and base our judgements for candidates solely on that.

To play the devil's advocate, George Bush is a conservative, he's never made any attempt to hide that. In the 2004 election he received more votes than any presidential candidate in the history of the nation (but not mine) so somebody must agree with his political philosophy. Did anybody really expect him not to nominate a fellow conservative when he had the chance?

Having said that, Harry Blackmun, who wrote the Court's opinion in Roe v. Wade, was nominated to the Supreme Court by that well known liberal Ricahrd Nixon. David Souter, arguably one of the most liberal Justices on the Rehnquist Court (not the "William Court"), was nominated to the Supreme Court by George H.W. Bush. At the time he was thought to be conservative and was chosen in large part because he was a "stealth candidate", for want of a better term - his lack of a paper trail would make his confirmation easier. Roberts also has a very thin paper trail. Who knows how he'll rule from the bench? We need to stop hyperventilating and wait to see how this plays out.

Ahhhhhhh, a voice of reason. I am learning so much here!

Curious, Larry -- this guy is 50. Does that make him young for a SC justice?

7 out of 9 justices on the o'connor court were picked by republican presidents and tend to vote 5-4. says something about so called republican picks.

like him or hate him, roberts is a sitting federal judge and sailed thru his confirmation hearing, clerked for reinquest, from various news reports he is very well liked and has many friends for both political persuasions and has been described as "nice man" and has a brillant legal mind....

tough to say he's not qualified......

I'd feel bad for you, but I have no soul.....

think it makes him one of the younger picks in modern times.....

i think they been getting younger over the years, usually in their mid to late 50s. this way we 25 or more years out of them on the bench.

For the current Court, no. Clarence Thomas was 43 when he was nominated and Rehnquist was 47 or 48 but the other 7 current members of the Court were all at least 50 when they were nominated. But that may not be true historically.

From what I have read (And there is not much available) Roberts appears to be a very intellectual judge who has had a history of strict interpretation of the law.

Mal.. that statement about men is about as absurd and irritating as when someone gun control freak says "GUNS kill people"

I really thought more of you than for you to stoop to adopting some lame slogan to help voice your opinion.

If I was a woman I would still think it wrong but think YOU had a right to do whatever you want with YOUR body. As for me and MINE, I would chose NO but vote to keep your rights YOURS. Hope that makes sense.

And realize that the GREATEST majority of women using abortion are doing so, not because of medical reasons or something of that nature, but are using it for birth control because they can't control themselves.

Rick, you accuse Mal of making absurd statements, but I have to say that your own last statement is pretty out there, too.....

To add my 2 cents, I don't agree with Mal that abortion would be sacred if men could get pregnant.... But I also take issue with Rick's statement about women getting abortions because "they can't control themselves." Sorry, but it takes TWO to get pregnant, and I would submit that in most cases of unexpected pregnancy, there was also lack of control by a male....

FWIW, I don't agree with abortion, but I don't think Roe v. Wade will be overturned. I have very mixed feelings when it comes to pregnancies that are the result of rapes and incest. I see that fetus as a child (but I respect others' right to disagree with me on this point), yet I don't see that a woman should be forced to carry the baby, and I'm glad there is access to legal, medically safe (mostly...) ways to terminate the pregnancy. It's a no-win situation....

On the issue of notification, parents need to have a say in their minor daughters' medical care, unless there is incest involved and the courts have terminated the parents' parental rights....

That did not answer what I asked . . . clarify yourself.

Women can't control themselves? Rick, come on.

Maybe we misinterpreted your comments about "can't control themselves". I read it to mean that women get abortions because they can't control themselves enough to not use birth control during intercourse.

Is that what you intended?

oh now I see it. Sorry it was a generalized statement based on the average type of woman that gets abortions. Sorry if you take offense to it, not meant to be offensive to women. It's just based on geographical, income and other things that GENERALLY hold true.

yes, more correctly put. Words written often take on their own meaning. And Mal, I didn't MEAN to be as harsh on you but the statement was absurd about men. I value your opinion and you have every right to say what you feel. As a matter of fact I generally agree with the Abortion Choice people, It is YOUR individual right to chose and NOT mine to say you can't do it.

And to me it makes it sound like you are claiming that women can't keep themself from having sex all the time and rather than use birth control at the time figure that if they get pregnant, they can always get an abortion. If that is what you are saying, it is pretty offensive. If it is not, please clarify for us all.
