Overall: Awesome song, great writing. It deserved to be a hit, however, it certainly shouldn’t have been his biggest hit, let alone his only #1. So it’s a bit overrated when put into context.

Studio version: Good recording, but way outplayed by radio stations who don’t seem to know that this and Come Monday aren’t the only recordings he ever did. It seems like the radio stations are out to make us hate this good song when the play it into the ground. It’s best in context of the original album.

Live: Back in the YHTBT days when the song was still young, it was awesome, judging from the live recordings I heard. As the years went on and all the “SALT, SALT, SALT” crap began and the horns took over the song, it seems like Jimmy’s just in that mode where he doesn’t really want to do it. (“I really don’t want to do this but those crazy parrotheads have a gun to my head”) Each live performance I’ve heard of M’ville from at least the last 5 years seems very lightweight, as to my ears I feel that Jimmy and the CRB are just coasting threw it every time. Get Robot on the pans for this song, loose the horns, loose the SALT SALT SALT and I may change my view on this.

Not to be too picky, but M'ville was never a number one song. I believe it peaked at number seven or eight.

Let's face it. This is THE song that put JB on the map for a LOT of PHolks. Not saying he wouldn't be wildly popular without it, but he's built an empire with this brand name. There should a deep appreciation, at the least, for the song.

Personally, I love it. I think it's simply one of the best songs ever written, not just one of the best JB songs.[/quote]

I have a love/hate relationship with this song. I love it, but I HATE it when it's the first song to play on my CD (Meet Me in Margaritaville, Beaches) and I have the volume fully turned up!

(Truthfully to those who have done this, doesn't it just give you a "rude awakening".

That wasn't even funny the first time and certainly hasn't gotten any funnier since then.

It got a laugh or two. Though not from so discerning a taste in witty repartee as yourself, I s'pose.

Yeah, add me to that. Especially when there are other people around. This also happens on the vinyl version of CILCIA when you flip it over to side two.

I missed the humor there completely, sorry.

“Hello, my name is Ringling Ringling and I’m a hypocrite, as I bring up a subject I supposedly “hate” coming up on BN.”

I never said I hated it coming up as fodder for good-natured needling. :D

In cyberspace no one can hear you laugh.

There's a fine line between "good natured needling" and out and out harassment. So, PM just so happens to be passionate about an issue he and others (yes, there are others) feel strongly about which is having the Buffett back catalog restored to it's proper condition. This apparently makes you and others feel justified in harassing him over it at any given opportunity especially when it isn't the topic at hand. Bit of advice: grow the hell up already.
