a little bit more indepth of an article:

Keith Urban has conquered Nashville and now he is taking on Hollywood.

The former skinny kid from the outer Brisbane farming area of Caboolture hopes to use his huge music fan base to launch a film career.

Urban, who has dominated the US country music charts, has some pretty impressive backers.

His first feature film will be guided by grand old Hollywood studio, Paramount Pictures, and maverick LA-based entertainment company, Melee Entertainment.

"Keith is the whole package," said Melee Entertainment's president Bryan Turner, who helped launch the music careers of rap stars Dr Dre, Ice Cube and Eazy-E in the 1980s.

"It's not just his sex appeal. It's that plus his songwriting abilities and the way he portrays himself in his songs and live shows and as an individual."

For every Presley and Sinatra success story, there has been tragic music crossover flops such as Mariah Carey's shocker, Glitter, and Britney Spears' stinker, Crossroads.

Urban's backers, however, say the Australian has the qualities to climb to the top of the Hollywood pile and challenge the industry's leading men.

AdvertisementIt also helps that Urban, 37, has a devoted base of female fans and a country music career that has sold more than five million albums worldwide.

Urban's first film is yet to be decided.

It will likely be a romantic drama, although all genres will be examined.

The film also will not necessarily involve Urban singing.

Turner said the project will be crafted specifically for the Australian.

"It's Keith's vehicle," Turner said.

"We're actually talking to writers and looking for scripts as we speak.

"We know the idea that we want and also we want something that Keith is comfortable with and fits his image and interests and beliefs.

"We want to customise something around what he is as a recording artist."

Melee Entertainment has a six film deal with Paramount and the Urban film will be the first under the partnership.

Turner compiled a list of country music stars he thought could breakthrough in Hollywood and Urban, who beat the likes of Tim McGraw and Willie Nelson to be named the Country Music Association's male vocalist of the year, was on top of the list.

Turner arranged a meeting and was so impressed a deal was hatched.

"We wanted someone with a big fan base and an image and persona worthy of building a feature film around," Turner said.

"We identified Keith as that individual."

Keith Urban is looking to try his luck on the silver screen. The country star has signed on with Melee Entertainment to develop a film project that is likely to be in theaters sometime next year. Melee previously produced last year's "You Got Served," which starred R&B acts B2K and Marques Houston.

Next year will also likely see the release of a new Urban album, the follow-up to his Capitol Nashville set "Be Here." Released in September 2004, the set bowed at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart and No. 3 on The Billboard 200. It has sold 1.4 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Urban's ongoing U.S. tour runs into early October. A set of European dates opens Oct. 12 in Birmingham, England.
