According to Alton Brown of Good Eats (great show on FoodTV) and Emeril, it is a custard.

It doesn't have a filling, so it's not a pie, and it doesn't have flour, so it's not a cake. It has eggs and cream of a sort (be it whipping cream or cream cheese), which is usually indicative of a custard.

Just my .02. I watch way too much FoodTV.
