Steve Martin had a comedy routine where he described "getting small" in much the same language as one might describe getting high.

It's a seventies thing.

Dave beat me to it. If you get a chance, check out Steve Martin Live....one of the funniest live performances I've ever seen. He does the get small routine on it as well.

Steve Martin did a comedy album in 1977 called Lets Get Small. I can't remember what the bit was excatly about, memory is kinda foggy that far back. Maybe somebody else can help.

I can atest to the fact that it is a 70s thing. If someone said to you, "Lets get small" it meant "Let's get stoned"! And at 11:30 on Saturday nights in the late 70s many were doing that watching SNL on the tube!!!

Steve's album
Side one includes:
Ramblin' Man/Theme from Ramblin' Man (2:14)
Vegas (5:45)
Let's Get Small (13:34)

Side two includes:
Smoking (2:10)
One Way to Leave Your Lover (1:33)
Mad at My Mother (1:22)
Excuse Me (2:32)
Grandmother's Song (3:33)
Funny Comedy Gags (3:05)
Closing (2:02)

An excerpt from the title cut:

I'm on drugs. You know what I'm talking about. I like to get small. It's very dangerous for kids, because they get realllly small.
I know I shouldn't get small when I'm driving, but I was drivin' around the other day and a cop pulls me over ... says, 'Hey, are you small?' I say, 'No, I'm tall.' He says, 'I'm gonna have to measure you.' They give you a little test with a balloon. If you can get inside it, they know you're small ... and they can't put you in a regular cell either, because you walk right out.

I think Steve Martin is one of the funniest men to every grace this earth. I laugh every time I hear the "get small" reference.

Kind of figured he meant getting high but didn't know where the reference came from.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.

Actually saw him do that in '77. Too damn funny.

.....I found out my cat was embezzelling from me...yeah, he'd go down to the mailbox, with his little arrow thru the head on [another of his trademark props], cash my checks.....how did I know....I found a closet FULL of new cat toys....couldn't return them, they had cat spit all over 'em...

He's also one hell of a banjo picker!
it's a magic kind of medicine, no doctor could prescribe...

Another Steve Martin reference (as you all should know) is on YHTBT.
"...I can't play them all, Excuuuuuuussssssseeee me, where here at the wild and crazy Fox theater..."
Ahhh the '70s, Steve Martin, classic SNL, so many memories forgotten
Please don't say manana if you don't mean it.

I never knew that until I saw a video on CMT.... Vince Gill , Steve Martin and a slew of others just picking away. Awesome! They actually got the Grammy award I think

Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance (Foggy Mountain Breakdown with Marty, Earl Scruggs, Randy Scruggs, Glen Duncan, Steve Martin, Vince Gill, Gary Scruggs, Albert Lee, Paul Shaffer, Jerry Douglas and Leon Russell)

Also....dreaming of Cheryl Tiegs....big american breasts (ala wild and crazy guy) from Live By The Bay (on further reflection it seems I may be wrong, maybe on a live album, perhaps YHTBT. I can't remember, but it's out there somewhere  )
