 I don't necessarily "speak" hip-hop... but I think what Gwen's saying in 'hollaback girl' (and mind you, she didn't write the song... Pharell did) is that she's not one to just sling jabs at people... if you're going to talk smack, be prepared to back it up... because she is.

Thank goodness for you, Ann! I think I get Gwen's gist, but is there such an entity as a "hollaback girl"? What IS one?

Hmmm... I'm not sure. I'm assuming here, but I think a 'hollaback girl' is just a type of girl, not necessarily an entity in itself.

Why do you ask? Just curious?

Actually I believe that 'hollaback girl' in hip hop terms is when guys will see attractive women walk by and they will yell at them 'hollaback girl' as a way of trying to get their attention and letting them know that they are hot. I think gwen is saying in this song that if you want to hook up with her thats not going to work because "she aint no hollaback girl"

Well, my daughter (she's 22) and I were hanging out yesterday and it came on the sound system at the bar we had lunch at . . . we were wondering what the term meant. She said she thought it was sorta like a "booty call" girl . . . not good enough to have a relationship with . . . so I asked here!?

Good point. I don't necessarily think a 'hollaback girl' is an established hip hop term. Pharrell wrote that song & created that moniker for Gwen. If you take a look at the lyrics, she challenges someone (I'm assuming a girl, even though she says dude) to a fight behind the bleachers.

Song lyrics:

Uh huh, this my s***
All the girls stomp your feet like this

A few times I've been around that track
So it's not just gonna happen like that
Cause I ain't no hollaback girl
I ain't no hollaback girl
[2x]

Oooh, this my s*** , this my s*** [4x]

I heard that you were talking
And you didn't think that I would hear it
People hear you talking like that, getting everybody fired up
So I'm ready to attack
, gonna lead the pack
Gonna get a touchdown, gonna take you out
That's right, put your pom-poms down, getting everybody fired up

A few times I've been around that track
So it's not just gonna happen like that
Cause I ain't no hollaback girl
I ain't no hollaback girl
[2x]

Oooh, this my s*** , this my s*** [4x]

So that's right dude, meet me at the bleachers
No principals, no student-teachers
Both of us want to be the winner, but there can only be one
So I'm gonna fight, gonna give it my all
Gonna make you fall, gonna sock it to you
That's right, I'm the last one standing, another one bites the dust

A few times I've been around that track
So it's not just gonna happen like that
Cause I ain't no hollaback girl
I ain't no hollaback girl
[2x]

Oooh, this my s*** , this my s*** 4x]

Let me hear you say, this s*** is bananas
B-A-N-A-N-A-S
this s*** is bananas
B-A-N-A-N-A-S
Again, this s*** is bananas
B-A-N-A-N-A-S
This s*** is bananas
B-A-N-A-N-A-S

A few times I've been around that track
So it's not just gonna happen like that
Cause I ain't no hollaback girl
I ain't no hollaback girl
[2x]

Oooh, this my s*** , this my s*** [4x]

Since Gwen Stefani sings it I think it's probably some kind of code for "I have no talent so I shake my ass at the camera when I make videos and hope all the 12 year olds get wood."

Gwen is apparently the captain of the cheerleader squad; she is the girl who “hollas” the chants, not one of the girls who simply “hollas” them back. Given that the squad is preparing to beat somebody up on Gwen’s behalf, she’s picked a strange time to remind them that she is their leader and they are her sheep-like followers. Gwen obviously rules her squad with an iron fist.
