Again, just my opinion but I'll take Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, Uncle Tupelo, Nanci Griffith, Tift Merritt, Emmylou Harris, the Bottle Rockets, the Old 97s, Slobberbone, the Drive-By Truckers and countless other bands over either of those two poseurs. I like most of those bands you mentioned except DBT (and i've never heard Slobberbone or BottleRockets), and i like Travis and Garth!!! It's more like its time for garth to come out of retirement again, he's been "retired" for the past 4 years. I have a sneeking suspicion that he will come out of retirement relitively soon, except for the fact that he isn't signed to a record label anymore. . .neither is Travis Tritt for that matter, both are no longer signed to any labelsJahfin wrote:Again, just my opinion but I'll take Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, Uncle Tupelo, Nanci Griffith, Tift Merritt, Emmylou Harris, the Bottle Rockets, the Old 97s, Slobberbone, the Drive-By Truckers and countless other bands over either of those two poseurs. My theory is that Garth will either form his own label of join some obscure indipendent label and completley dominate it, OR both Garth and Travis will sign to Toby Keith's new indipendent label when he debut's it next year. . .I can see travis signing to Toby's label, but Garth is too big of a powerhouse to sign to Toby's label IMO, so that isn't as probable.
My prediction is that they will both continue to s*** well into the new millenium.DsilCaribe wrote:I like most of those bands you mentioned except DBT (and i've never heard Slobberbone or BottleRockets), and i like Travis and Garth!!! You may think that Garth sucks, but when he sells 10 million more albums and racks up a whole new generation of fans and sells out arenas even in Japan, we'll see who is talking then.Jahfin wrote:My prediction is that they will both continue to s*** well into the new millenium.DsilCaribe wrote:I like most of those bands you mentioned except DBT (and i've never heard Slobberbone or BottleRockets), and i like Travis and Garth!!! You can't run away from the influence Garth Brooks has had on country music and pop music, a positive influence IMO.
anyways, anyone else seeing any good concerts this summer?

The likes of N'STINK and the Backstreet Boys also sell lots of records and David Hasselhoff is extremely popular overseas, that doesn't mean they don't s***. It's a matter of personal opinion and personal taste, record sales and popularity elsewhere doesn't even figure into the equation.DsilCaribe wrote:You may think that Garth sucks, but when he sells 10 million more albums and racks up a whole new generation of fans and sells out arenas even in Japan, we'll see who is talking then.
I don't deny the influence Garth has had, nor am I trying to run away from it. Sometimes I wonder where you come up with this stuff especially when I never said any of it to start with. I think of Garth as the Hootie of country music. Nothing the matter with them or him, they just homogenized their respective music to the point where it was palatable to the masses. Some may think that's a good thing, I don't. Give me someone like Steve Earle or Alejandro Esocovedo any dat over the watered down "country" music drivel churned out by the likes of Garth.DsilCaribe wrote:You can't run away from the influence Garth Brooks has had on country music and pop music, a positive influence IMO..

Garth Brooks recently acquired the rights to all of his old masters which means if and when he comes out of retirement, he'll also be able to distribute his old material along with the new under whatever label he's with. I'm with you. I think he'll either be out on his own label or a small independent one. And once Garth comes back, look for Trisha Yearwood to switch to that label within a year.DsilCaribe wrote:I like most of those bands you mentioned except DBT (and i've never heard Slobberbone or BottleRockets), and i like Travis and Garth!!! There is NO WAY that Garth Brooks will sign to a small independent label. If that were the case why not just release something himself? Garth is Nashville all the way. I also have my dougts about Toby Keiths new label. I doubt he strays very far from the Nashville machine. I don't buy it at all.

Just because someone is on an independent label, does it mean that they have to sound like Neko Case. If Garth would sign with an independent label, which I think there is a good chance that he would, I would expect his next album to be in the same vein as his previous albums. It would have the same sound, he would just reap more of the profits.a1aara wrote:Ilph wrote:Garth Brooks recently acquired the rights to all of his old masters which means if and when he comes out of retirement, he'll also be able to distribute his old material along with the new under whatever label he's with. I agree with what you are saying. That's why I said why not release it himself? I think it would be great if Garth signed with OH BOY. Garth could make John Prine a lot of money! I just think that Garth won't stray too far from the Nashville establishment.Ilph wrote:Just because someone is on an independent label, does it mean that they have to sound like Neko Case. I agree that whatever label Garth comes out with, it will be involved with the Nashville machine. Whether independent or Garth's on his own, I think it will either be rooted in Nashville or have a strong presence there. I would also look for Pat Algar to move to that label and work with Garth.a1aara wrote:I agree with what you are saying. That's why I said why not release it himself? I love the story Todd tells about Garth Brooks calling him about Alright Guy.
"Then again, how much have you got?"
What's the phone call story?
Garth kept calling Todd to ask permission to change the lyrics to the song. Todd didn't believe that it was Garth. Todd kept hanging up on him.
