Garza brothers are readying more Texican rock & roll . . . slowly
Although Los Lonely Boys' 2004 self-titled debut went multiplatinum and earned the band a Grammy, the follow-up isn't coming easy.
"It's been pretty tough, man," says guitarist Henry Garza of the sessions. "I ain't gonna lie to you."
Months on the road, including a stint with Carlos Santana, left the West Texas trio little time to work on new songs. So Henry and his brothers (drummer Ringo and bassist JoJo) found themselves finishing their tunes in the studio. They hope to have the record in stores in the late fall or winter.
"They say you gotta have hit songs," Henry says. "But our songs mean something. Either you understand that or you don't . . . We make sure that we write and perform like Los Lonely Boys: three brothers who like to have fun and share what they have in their hearts."
Among the new songs are "My Way," which slams meddling execs; the ballad "Never Met a Woman," which Garza calls a "making-babies song"; and "This One's for the Outlaws Before Me," which the Garzas hope will feature Willie Nelson.
Other tracks like "Home," "Memories" and "My Loneliness" reflect the band's life on the road, which has been at times, well, lonely. "The songs on this album are what was going on at the height of our success: being away from home, missing the ones you love and trying to figure out what's really important -- which, you know, isn't Los Lonely Boys at all," Henry says. "It's the fact that you can bring joy through song, and we were able to do that."
To that end, the guitarist promises more of what got them where they are: "Get ready for some Texican rock & roll again."
