By Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Bonnie Raitt will begin a fall tour Oct. 5 in Tulsa, Okla., in support of her new album, "Souls Alike." That set is due Sept. 13 via Capitol and will be led by the single "I Will Not Be Broken," which is due to arrive next week at U.S. radio outlets.

Raitt will be backed on the road by such longtime contributors as bassist Hutch Hutchinson, drummer Ricky Fataar, keyboardist Jon Cleary and guitarist George Marinelli.

As she has in the past, Raitt will be touring in eco-friendly buses to help promote Green Highway, the environmental organization she co-founded with Kathy Kane. Additional dates are being eyed for February.

I've been fortunate enough to see her a couple of times. The first with John Prine opening. His music is so intimate it is probably better suited to a club size crowd but he pulled it off. Also I have lasting memories of standing out in the rain with a precious few other concert goers hearing them duet on Prine's "Angel From Montgomery".

The second time, she was on a bill with Jackson Browne, Bruce Hornsby and Shawn Colvin at an anti-nuclear benefit to help shut down the Sharon Harris nuclear power plant near Raleigh. It was very different because no one artist "opened" for the other one, they played in different configurations throughout the night (which also included longtime Jackson Browne sideman David Lindley and his then percussionist, Wally Ingram). The evening ended with Dennis 2 sending squalls of rain over the audience while Bonnie, Jackson and Lindley wailed away on "Running On Empty". Despite the cause, I don't think I recall any preaching from the stage either, it was all about the music.
