when a lightening storm blows in? We've got one coming. I pretty much do when it gets close. But I don't unhook the cable or unplug it. I just turn it off. I wonder if that's enough or if it's necessary.

Do you get showers, talk on the phone or shut windows?

YES!!
And unplug the phone line to the modem and/or DSL modem/router. Unless you have a high end powerstrip that covers the phone line too.

We don't. In fact, there is quite a spectacular lightning storm going on right now. When I was a kid in Mobile, we got hit several times. One time in particular, lightning hit one of our pine trees and actually burrowed a path to the house. It looked like the gopher from Caddyshack had burrowed to the house and took a sledgehammer to the cinderblocks at the slab. We lost the tv that time. Our neighbor claimed that during that same storm that they had sparks coming out of their curtain rods.

I remember when I was young and a storm would blow in, my mom would turn the air conditioner, and everything else off. But I don't think she does that anymore.
I don't turn anything off. I never think to when storms roll in. I'm either sewing or sitting on the computer trying to rush hoping that the power doesn't go out

Buy a good surge protector. If you get zapped, its more likely to happen from the phone or cable line.
