snake in my house!!

I walk into my living room a few hours ago and find a freakin' snake laying in the middle of the floor :o .
After I panicked for a second thinking it would escape into another part of the house I grabbed the nearest thing and whacked him pretty good with an unopened umbrella and killed it.
It's only about the size of a pencil and looks like a corn snake to me even though my dad aka Dr. Doomsday (who overeacts and sees the worst in everything) thinks it's poisonous and is now giving me the "you probably have more in your house/watch out for the mom" routine.
That's the last thing my my wife needed to hear and I had to go throughout the house looking under every freakin' thing for more
She would not even go in the house until I told her I checked everywhere.
She even bought a bunch of moth balls to put in the yard as if that would help. We don't leave the doors open so I guess it somehow squeezed under one of the doors.
So now instead of worrying about the occasional house spider as well as black widows in the garage I've got to keep an eye out for snakes
Man! the hell that is suburbia

Since we have moved, we have found quite a few snakes in our house. I have been picking them up--with something around my hand--and putting them outside. They are just little ones, the size of a pencil but longer.

How good would it have been if you would have yelled at him, "Hey Snake, we need more wine!"

This is a pic of a corn snake. It looked sorta like this but not exactly.
It is sorta brown and reddish. About the same size too.
I suppose I could have picked it up and let it out but in the heat of the moment my first instinct was to whack it.
A snake in the house is a first for me as a homeowner although when growing up a bigger one did crawl in my parent's window and across my mom's chest. I believe it met the same fate.

Red is not a necessarily good color in a banded snake in FL..... :o

I know coral snakes.
A few years ago I picked up one that was on the steps at my job and carried it around showing it.
Everyone thought I was out of my mind...of course they were right
Funny, I smash the corn snake and pick up the coral snake  .

It picks up on key words from the page and posts links to related sites. Can't remember what it was, but there was something else in the links the other day that made me chuckle. :)

Red next to yellow can kill a fellow.
Red next to black is a friend of Jack.

That was the little ditty we lived by at the zoo. We used a Cali King Snake in our shows and it was a great tool for demonstating the difference between our king snake and a coral snake since their appearance is so similar.

I miss that king snake...he was soooo cool. I called him Elvis.
