Did I slam anyone here?

The answers are rather simple.
You didn't slam anyone?
Generalizing a whole group of people who were according to you "too drugged out to remember anything"
That doesn't sound very nice to me...
I've been in that state many times at Dead shows and I remember plenty. I've also been stone cold sober at shows and the music was just as good. Many people who only listen to SYKBH might say the same things about Parrotheads. It's too bad you were busy making fun of people and no enjoying one of the greatest bands of all time. It's truly your loss.

I didn't slam anyone here.
It may have seemed to you that I was slamming everyone at the concert but I wasn't just those few who I remember well who were mostly unconsious by the end of the first song. And I did not spend the entire concert making fun of them, I just enjoyed doing so. As it happens we had very nice seats for the show and I watched the entire show from them. I will not say that they are one of the greatest bands of all time nor will I tell you you are wrong in thinking so. You have your opinion I have mine. I do like a lot of their music but the Seattle show was a bad one again my own opinion, but the lady I went wilth was a die hard Deadhead (she pulled her kids out of school in Washington to go to San Francisco for a gathereing in Jerrys honor) was majorly disappointed in it as well.

And yes there are a good many people at Jimmys concerts who behave as badly but as I said before, I make fun of them too.

Calling people who disagree with you clueless isn't very nice either. And from what I read, he didn't generalize that they were all like that, rather that he laughed at the ones who were.

Well, at home, listening to Reckoning and paying my own special tribute to Jerry. I really could care less what some people say, his music touched my life, that's all that matters...

Faring thee well now.
Let your life proceed by its own design.
Nothing to tell now.
Let the words be yours, I'm done with mine

I never got the attraction to the Dead, Phish or any other bands with a hippy or cultlike following but I've heard people say the same about Jimmy so I'm cool with that. Different strokes.
I've always heard people speak highly (pardon the pun) of him.
He helped make people's lives better just like Jimmy is doing now. Musically I still think they were all that great although that song and video with the singing skeletons was pretty cool.

Sometimes you have to look beyond all the smoke and mirrors. In this case the Deadheads, who tend to get all the attention in favor of the music. That's nothing against them whatsoever but there was so much more to the Grateful Dead than that. I could see where a lot of people might get turned off to the music without hearing a note because a lot of times the media attention is focused on the Deadheads and not the Grateful Dead themselves. If you're willing to set that aside long enough to listen to their music with an open mind you may find yourself discovering a whole new world of music you never knew existed. As several others have already commented, there was also more to them than just a hippie "jam" band. Throughout their career and Garcia's side projects, they touched on nearly every musical style known to man and then some: jazz, blues, reggae, jug band, folk, rock, country & western, classical and more experimental electronic styles. With that broad of a palatte to chose from, there should be a little something there for everybody.

If you think it takes drugs in order to enjoy the music you've fallen prey to one of the most common misnoners surrounding the Grateful Dead's tunes.

I spend a lot of time around the skiing crowd (Where dead music is king) Thus, I have heard a lot of their tunes.

I'm curious, since I don't know a lot of history on the Dead, and have only heard some of their music, where the rainbow bears came from or started and are they related to something other than the Dead?

The Dancing Bears are a Dead trademark. Arguably, rainbow part comes from the Dead's association with Ken Keasy and the Merry Pranksters, who had a passion for Day Glo colors. Here's a little history:

"In 1973, Owsley "Bear" Stanley, the Dead's former sound mixer, went to work on the last album the band did for Warner Brothers. His friend Bob Thomas designed the cover. The album was called "Bear's Choice", which is where the bears came from."

There's no deeper meaning to the bears, skull & roses, skeletons, etc. other than they are images associated with the Grateful Dead outside of their music. According to someone from UNC Chapel Hill that did a documentary on them that aired on PBS a few years back that's part of what makes the Grateful Dead fan community a "subculture". Those images are as infinitely connected to the Grateful Dead as their music.
