Any Martin Denny fans out there?

Here you can discuss any other artist including Sunny Jim, Todd Snider, Jerry Jeff Walker, Steve Goodman, James Taylor, Alan Jackson, Bob Marley, Kenny Chesney and others

Any Martin Denny fans out there?

Post by Spinniker »

I was thinking of buying a couple CD’s of his, so I need a recommendation of which one or two would be a good starter set…

Quiet Village.

I grew up listening to that over and over.

My dad told me once I was "made to that music".

I'm cornfused or perhaps I just misunderstood but I thought the Related Artists section was for the discussion of any artist. To add to that, if any artist is "related" to what Buffett does I'd say it's Martin Denny, particularly since he guests on Live In Hawaii. I would also think any discussion regarding other artists (related or not) would be found more easily in the Related Artists section rather than in Off Tropics. To eliminate any further confusion, I suggest the "Related" part of that topic area be removed and be changed to something like "Other Artists" that way there's no question as to what that area's for. Just a suggestion...

That's cool. I'm not at all familiar w/ Martin Denny, so I didn't realize how he is "related" to Buffett is all.

They play him on RM every now and again.

JB's song Altered Boy on FSOTW is a tribute to Martin Denny....

Well like Jah said, this forum is really for all non Buffett songs/artists/whatever...related or not. If it's music I toss it over here.

SGH, my mom and I saw MD at the shell in Waikiki. Wow. It was great.

Can't recommend a CD, but will be watching the thread so I can get one, too....through amazon.com...clicking through from BN, of course!

phjiim should be happy. I had to purchase about 5 new CD's recently! For work-related research on ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL.....

First of all, that would be Little Feat. To my ears, the connection can be summed up with these lines from "Saxophones":

I cut my teeth on gumbo rock
Benny Spellman and Doctor John
Sweet Irma Thomas and Frogman Henry
Use to boogie woogie all night long

What they have in common is what links Buffett's music to New Orleans and the Neville Brothers (and the other artists he mentions in the song) and that would be "gumbo" rock, a mixture of R & B, blues, country, jazz, etc.

I recomend the Exotic sounds of Martin Denny. This is a 2cd collection that covers most of his best work. Hard to find this or other exotica music in stores, Amazon has it, sometimes they bundle it with Don Tiki who I highly recomend.

I also recommend "The Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny"...and ditto on Don Tiki!

Funny...just realized I hear Martin Denny fairly often on RM, but don't recall ever hearing Don Tiki on there? Whats up with that!?
