Buffett: American Storyteller... Anyone got this album??

Post by HsvParrothead »

Alright... so I'm in Wal-Mart last night and just skimmed through the Buffett bin for sh*ts and giggles... came across an album I've never heard of (dont think) and never seen before.

Titled: American Storyteller... it was released under the old Barnaby label from years ago?? But released in the late '90's I believe... so If I recall, it was just a re-hash of his earliest stuff....

Anybody have this one??? What's the deal on it??

Is this legit... a tribute album... or simply another re-release from the original Buffett label of his High Cumberland Jubilee music???

I didnt buy it... but curious, in case I come across it in the future.

I see it at Walmart alot and always wondered the same thing. Would it be better to get this CD or get the original CDs these songs came off of?

My aunt bought it for herself thinking it would be the stereotypical tropical just because it was Buffett.
She said "this sucks" and gave it to me

I have it because I found it at Half Price Books, it was marked down to $1 and they gave it to me for FREE

And yes, wBEGs---it's a rehash of earlier work

Not a bad CD, but you probably already have the songs on something else.

The best Buffett concert I ever attended was the one when half of the SYKBH crowd left because they didn't know the songs he was playing. Hence, this album is great! :D

I wouldn't say "it sucks" just that it's a compilation of his 2 weakest albums, not that there are not some good songs on the first two.
I just think it's before he discovered his niche.
"Livingston's Gone To Texas" is one of my faves, better than the re-recording that he later did in my opinion.

I have to say I prefer the seperate CD releases by Varse that are actually CD issues of the orignal LPs (Down To Earth and High Cumberland Jubilee), just with a bonus track each thrown in the mix. I'd say get um' as close as you can to the orignals and ignore all these repacked compilations. Plus, I think Varse's engineers did a rather nice job with the remastering.

The reason that there are so many releases of the same material from the first two albums is due to the Celeberty Licensing Co. getting a hold of all the masters when Barnaby went under. That company just lends the masters to anyone who wants them and can release them any way they choose. The same thing happened with Van Morrison's Bang material, which covers his first album and inlcudes the original Brown Eyed Girl. There's just so many of those cheap repackageed editons that you can't even find the orignal albums on CD anywhere. Quite a dumb concept that litters the CD racks if you ask me.

Yeah, I have a hard time buying these repackaged deals just because in most cases, they're thrown together with little regard for the music or the fans.

I don't think there's been any Buffett releases done for the true fans. Every product released under the name seems to be compiled with the casual fan in mind... I know their the mass market and all, but plenty of artists take a detour now and then and give those of us into the fine details some goodies, like rarity collections/anthologies. There were 8 rarities collected in one place on BBB&B, yes, but that's obviously more in the direction of a 4 disk greatest hits compilation with themes.
