Southern Cross by Jimmy...

... is much more moving and powerful than the original studio CSN version.

I just heard it on the radio, and as much as I tried, I just couldn't get excited about it! I guess I've grown accustomed to needing the guitars, and the "Wooooo's" and everything. I think I almost nodded off even! :D

I used to love CSNs version more than Jimmy's. Jimmy's used to even kinda annoy me.

Now I like Jimmy's more for the same reasons you mentioned.

I get a little sleepy when I hear it by CSN.

I'm tired of hearing it, it's a good bathroom break song. But then, at my age almost any song is a good bathroom break song.

Brown Eyed Girl is my bathroom break song. It's nice and long too which gives you time to get back before a decent song comes on.

Agree with Jimmy's version being better. The original is just kind of boring. Same with Mexico.

I agree. I'm somewhat tired of hearing it as well. But as my wife says "Jimmy's version of others songs are usually as good or better than the originals (e.g., Southern Cross, Brown Eyed Girl (another tired song), Mexico, Another Saturday Night, etc. etc)."

LOVE that song. I love any song I can sing harmony with. :D
St. Somewhere (the original band, with Matt Hall singing lead) has an excellent version.
And I love "Brown Eyed Girl", because I have brown eyes and it means something special to me.

I agree.
A while back I finally got to hear the original "Uncle John's Band" and "Scarlett Begonias" and they also seem rather dead compared to Jimmy's versions.

Jimmy shines on all of his cover songs. I believe it's because those songs meant something to him and it's his way to show his gratitude. OBTW I will let y'all know how CSN "Southern Cross" sounds live. I am in row 5 for their show at Mountain Winery next month. Can't hardly wait! 8) 8) 8)

I really like both versions, although Jimmy's version is more upbeat.

Jimmy's cover versions are almost always more upbeat than the originals. He has a knack for taking popular songs (as opposed to obscure ones) and making them his own. Having said that, I love Van Morrison's Brown Eyed Girl, CSN's Southern Cross, JT's Mexico and the Dead's Uncle John's Band and Scarlet Begonias. Those are all classics. I wouldn't go so far as to say that Jimmy's versions are better - they're just different, and they fit perfectly into his songbook.

Jimmy's cover is the best...I never tire of it. Maybe because it has so many good memories attached to it...gives me duck bumps every time he gets to the line...

"She's all that I have left...and music is her name."

First time I ever heard the song was at Jones Beach a few years back. Everybody was standing and singin along and I was just in awe and unfamiliar with the lyrics. When the song was over, Jimmy thanked Steve Stills. I knew I had to get the CSN CD. I think their version with Tim Schmit is better vocally, but I love hearing JB do it.
