Peddlers and Pushers

Post by phansheridan »

I was listening to some old Buffett in the car today that I have on my IPod and this song came on, it was written in 1971 (over 30 years ago) the lyrics are still very relevant to today's issues. Its amazing to me how timely Jimmys music is even if it's unintentional

Peddlers and Pushers
By: Jimmy Buffett

There running out of gas for your automobile
The only way to get its gonna know how to steal
Or push your car home 'til your back starts breaking
I'm sorry now kiddies that's too much to take in

Chorus
I wanna be a peddler not a pusher
I can't wait 'til they find a new gusher
Skinny tires and wires get me where I want to go

There won't be gas for campers or trailers
None for big yachts or even Boston whalers
The only people moving gonna be the sailors
Just casting their fate to the wind

[chorus]
I wanna be a peddler not a pusher
I can't wait 'til they find a new gusher
Skinny tires and wires get me where I want to go

And I hope this record won't be my final
But this company is just about to run out of vinyl
Maybe they'll go back to plastic on paper
Or even punching holes in Vanilla wafers

Oh now people you have heard my warning
Better get up kind of early this morning
And get yourself down to the bicycle dealer
Pick out one, maybe two, or three wheeler

[chorus]
But you'd be a peddler not a pusher
Don't wait around they ain't gonna be a gusher
Skinny tires and wired get you where you want to go
Yeah where you want to go
Both shows at Greatwoods in June
Seattle and Vegas in October

I remember those days...you could only by gas on certain days depending on what your license plate was. That was the gasoline "shortage" period. Good times, good times.... thank goodness I was just a kid at the time.

Tenspeed, I don't need
My pickup gets me where I please,
Chugging down the street

but...

A full tank was only a fin...

That's a little over .25/gal., folks! Oh, how times has changed!

I remember when I could get gas for around 70/80 cents a gallon. I had a small 8 gallon tank in my POS back then, and I could at times fill it up for 5 bucks.

When I got my license, there was a brief time I could get gas for $0.76 per gallon (which was ultra-cheap at the time, it was 1987). Typically back then it was around $0.99.
