With no offense to Jahfin, and only speaking for myself... because his professional experience has earned him the distinction of our resident expert on the music industry.
With no offense to anyone, there also several people who fall into the category of "tapers" who actually tend to know as much as anyone (and sometimes more) than those in the industry. When you personally spend thousands in recording equipment, odds are you are well versed in what is allowed when it comes to taping live performances.

I am neither a taper nor musician, but I am an avid collector of Dave Matthews and Phish shows. Also, Buffett, but those are obviosly on a differnt scale, since the RM broadcasts.

Anywho, my understanding of taping policies are that it's up to the band. DMB and Phish and GD have always been taper friendly, meaning that they encourage people to tape their shows IN PERSON, and trade freely amongst one another. The key word being freely.

That said, logically there would be no royalty payments necessary since all recordings are traded freely, whithout anyone paying for them. However, when JB sells Live in <insert town here>, there probably are royalties that need to be paid on cover tunes, since the album is being sold for profit.

One other caveat, is that bands such as DMB and Phish have always asked in the past that when a professional release of a live show comes out, that fans not circulate the taped version. Generally it's not a big deal since the quality is much better when officially released by the band, though.

So, that's how I understand it. Remember, I don't tape at shows nor am I a recording artist. Just an avid collector and listener of good music and bands. Take it for what it's worth.

What do my cheese and panties have to do with any of this???? :o :o :o :o :o Have you seen my panties or cheese diffusing ANYTHING you've had to do with lately?

I mean, drop it already, or go read some liner notes or something.  I like ya dude, but get over it. I've made a sincere effort to keep my bunched panties and cheese where they are welcome.
Very telling how you took such offense to PM's comments when he never even mentioned your name throughout the course of his response.

...and thanks for the taper friendly folks that chimed in with their take on the situation. I'm not a taper myself but have plenty of friends that tape shows. Sometimes even if a band is ok with taping certain venues may not be and all the ones I know of adhere to their wishes. There's also "stealth" taping but that's another issue entirely. Just so long as their shows don't show up on eBay, I think most bands are ok with it.

I don't think that's the case at all especially since you aren't the only one that's taken the "cheese, spork, etc." route in the past.

It looks as though you've already answered that.

In hopes that this thread doesn't escalate into another useless p*** contest, I understand the reasoning behind the "cheese" posts but I'd much rather see the subject matter hashed out among all the respective parties rather than see someone try to do what they percieve to be "diffusing" the situation by resorting to such ridiculous nonsense as replying with "cheese" comments.

And my point was I haven't diffused anyone's (namely yours or PMs) anything with cheese. Y'all asked us to stop harping on the liner notes, but then it's OK to bring up bunched panties and cheese in a way to backhandedly insult?

I agree this shouldn't turn into a p*** match, Jah, but this really has GOT to be a two way street.

actually there's nothing to "hash out". the question posed was:

What's jimmy's taping policy?

answer:

he doesn't allow it.

plain and simple.

I agree but no one named names when it came to the "cheese" comments, by stepping forward and taking credit for it you made yourself guilty by association when you're not the only one that's made those kinds of comments in the past.

then start a "why doesn't JB allowing taping" thread

or

a "jimmy should allow taping" thread

That was only part of the question, there was also a matter of Buffett dishing out royalties for the songs he covers in concert (which I think has also been answered sufficently, all without Lee having to chime in).

Just because Parrot Monkey and myself happen to be the most vocal opponents to all the BS we see on the site, it doesn't mean we're the only ones that feel that way. Some of you also tried to accuse me and Alaara of being the same person just because we share similar musical tastes. More BN BS on the part of some of you. Maybe one day you'll wake up and realize not all of us think the same way, nor would we want to. What a boring place the world would be if that was the case. Maybe that's your idea of utopia but it sure as hell isn't mine. If there's any artist out there loves celebrating diversity it's Jimmy Buffett, sadly that's not always reflected by his fans (the online portion anyway).
