Been meaning to tell you guys this

Post by Ilph »

For those of you who don't know, I'm a third grade teacher, and I got tired of the old, "touch your head/shoulders/nose when you're ready" and taught my kids "fins up if you're ready." Out of nowhere they started swaying to the left and right! It took me almost a whole minute to regain my composure and start teaching the next lesson.

It's just a way to have all the students show you that they're ready and to focus on the task at hand.

They sound like some clever kids, with that left and right swaying on the spur of the moment.

I just finished my first week. It went really well. And to see 24 kids just randomly doing fins back and forth was hilarious. I had to tell you guys because no one else would've really gotten it.

I too am a teacher (Physical Education) and I had just gone to a seminar about getting students attention and one of the things they did was the Head, Shoulders, etc. and I immediately thought of putting the fins up instead. I only get the privilege of having the kids run around with the Fins Up. I haven't tried it yet, but I will let you know how it goes to see about 45 elementary students running around a gym with FINS HIGH!!

Umm, Alison, where did you grow up? Because I had a Mrs. Kramer for fourth grade, and the world can be a very small place....

Ok, good. Because having the same elementary school teacher totally would've freaked me out. (Did I ever tell you that I got to know one of the girls in the club only to find out that our ex-boyfriends are roommates in Dayton?)

As a former pre-school teacher, I really hated the dreaded H&S,K&T,K&T! Most kids know their body parts at this point. Fins up, Fins down, right, left and on and on could have way more fun. Now, could we add colors and shapes?

Hey, who remembers that rainy day (no outdoor recess) game Heads Up Seven Up? Instead of saying, Heads Down, thumbs up, you could say Heads Down, Fins Up!
