The 32nd anniversary of the fatal plane crash in Louisiana that took Jim Croce( born January 1943 in Philly) & Maury Muehleisen is nearly upon us- 9/20/73 September 20th also marks the anniversary of the 1984 passing of Steve Goodman. I'd like to make a pitch for marquee mention on the Related Artists Discussion for Jim Croce, a man who was an influence and friend of Jimmy Buffett. Some argue that Croce's passing moved Jimmy up from the on-deck circle to the plate if you will at ABC- Dunhill. Jimmy has never covered a JC tune as far as I know. I'd suggest Roller Derby Queen.

No, that can't be right.

It seems like just yesterday I saw him with John Prine at the Alabama Theater.

Didn't I hear once that they have talked in passing about doing a couple of duets together?

I'd like to hear Buffett do "Alabama Rain".

I would have loved to have heard a duet of the two of them!

And Jimmy doing Roller Derby Queen would be classic! :D

Connie - I have him in my car too.

Another common ground - restaurants. Croce's is a great restaurant in the Gaslamp District of San Diego run by Jim's widow Ingrid. Great food and some really nice Jim memorabilia, plus good live music at the Top Hat Bar and Grill next door.

Speakin of Caroline Street, it was Steve Goodman who co-wrote that tune with Jimmy.

I was a Croce fan before I 'knew' Buffett......
Couldn't agree more that Roller Derby Queen Or Speedball Tucker would be great Buffett covers.....
I also would love to hear Buffett cover Lover's Cross......
What a loss....

Have any of you seen that Jim Croce DVD with just him and Murray on guitars, made for TV? Great video.

I'd like to see J.B. sing "I've Got A Name"

Other than "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and Jonathan Edwards' "Sunshine" being the first songs I remember hearing cuss words in, my first memories of Jim Croce come from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert when they used to show videos of some of his songs. It wasn't until years later that I learned MCA originally marketed Buffett as "the next Croce" following Croce's untimely death. The Buffett connection was made even clearer in VH1's Behind the Music special where they mentioned Buffett spending some time with Croce during Buffett's Montana years. I'd also love to hear a cover and am surprised he hasn't done one by now. Maybe it's something that still hits too close to home, even after all of these years.
