Would you be that irresponsible to yourself and your family to not have provisions to get thru 3-4 days? Or are you ignorant and expect someone else to come and wipe your ass? This is about personable responsibility to one's self these people didn't have enough to get thru ONE day. Do they go to McDonalds and get three meals a day? Did the Mayor and his office warn these people to prepare? C'MON

So WHERE WERE THE MAYOR AND THE GOVENOR???
WHAT were they doing during those days???
JUST WHAT did THEY do and put in place???

Are you telling us that whatever natural disaster happens in any state is the fault and responsibility of President Bush and the Federal Goverment??

IMHO, they were fiddling while Rome burned!

Just the fact that he sent those people to a "Shelter" and made no provisions for food and water speaks a book. A mayor should know his people and it's obvious that these people always have relied on someone to take care of them be it Uncle Sam or the Local Government. He should've realized that these people were going to show up without provisions. Anyone who watched them pile into that place, Sunday evening, saw their two bottles of soda and a big of chips.

Ironically, Noah's Wish, a non profit disaster pet rescue and shelter organization was outside the disaster area on Aug 30th, and in Slidell LA rescuing animals on the 31st. Seems the gov't could learn a thing or two from this volunteer organization.

Get real.
It is incumbent on our Federal Government (FEMA) and, ultimately, our President to oversee the EFFORTS TO RELIEVE SUFFERRING OF ITS CITIZENS.

As posted earlier in this thread, it took us 5 DAYS to provide assistance to tsunami survivors in Thailand.
How can it take 4 days to make an impact within our own country?

WHICH goverment are you talking about??? The federal or the state?
The state has to ASK the federal goverment for the aid if they wait a week or whatever to ask and we all see it on tv ...oh well the state should have asked sooner...meanwhile people suffer and some die....Blame the Governor and the Mayor... If President Bush sent troops down there without being asked you would be hearing hell about it raised before the planes landed.

The mayor lost his home - he rode out the storm and has been staying in a downtown hotel with no electricity, water etc just like the citizens of his city that stayed and where facing this catastrophic event.

The LA Gov. was in Baton Rouge. I mean wouldn't you expect the govenor of your state to be in the State Capitol??

And Bush was at his comfy ranch in Crawford Texas. Yea he did cut his vacation sort - by one day- BIG FREAKING DEAL. It wasn't until he started getting severe critizism did he do anything to step up the pace of FEMA.

You can defend Bush until the cows come home however that dosn't change the fact that he is Commander in Chief, the inefective rescue of US Citizens on US soil was a sloppy job and as Commander in chief this falls all on his shoulders - like it or not!!

I really can't answer where the breakdown was but you truly can't understand the disaster system until you've been a part of it. You just don't just get your resources rolling with no real destination, you'd end up with free-lancing, all your eggs in one basket, and basically chaos. In addition, to stage resources closer to the disaster risks having them become part of the disaster. There are teams that assess the need, immediately after the disaster, in each affected area. Once the initial needs assessment is done than you appropriate your resources accordingly. It's a very complicated process.

Not for nothing the feds sent the paper for the governor to sign giving them the power to take over and she sat on it and waited until it was too late. She didn't ask for the help. It was up to her. The Feds can't just bust in. That is the way things are set up to protect the rights of the individual states. I think it is taught in most eigth grade social studies classes.

Sam, the point I think you are missing is that having to ASK for help in this age of live feeds direct from disaster areas is more than archaic. I think this is the beef that most folks have. One would think that the local and state officials *might* have a little more on their plates than thinking about making a phone call to ask for help that is obviously needed...especially if those very folks are in the areas where communication has been cut off. It was obvious to everyone that the situation was far worse than ever expected. Something needs to change...immediately.

By your reasoning, I guess FEMA shouldn't even exist.
It's people's own fault by living where flooding, forest fires, earthquakes can occur.

Please refer back to page 3 which cites the Govenor's woefully inadequate request for Federal assistance when she thought she was facing a Cat 5 storm aimed directly at New Orleans.

Laugh now but every citizen in the United States, no matter where you reside, should have at least 3 days of food and water on hand at all times. If you don't, you're a fool. If you think it can't happen to you, you're a fool.

The Ammo, well that's personal preference.

LB, having just recently moved to an area at risk for hurricanes, you'd be surprized at the information available on how to prepare for a hurricane.

All of the local towns, regardless of size, have available what the minimum you should have on hand, should the need arise.

They all stress that prepardness is the key to survival and that it should sustain you....until help arrives

Y'know what?
I do have emergency rations, water and gasoline stored. 8)
I've grown up here in earthquake country and I know what being cut off is like.

But, that said, doesn't mean that there aren't less fortunate others who haven't planned adequately.
It's ridiculous to simply say, even if you might feel that way, that people do not deserve help.
In America, we should be able to provide life-sustaining aid in within a REASONABLE time.
