Thank You, Other Countries, for your support

Connie posted this in the daily thread yesterday, but I found it so interesting that I thought I'd repost it here... I brought this up with friends at lunch, and couldn't remember the country that gave $100 million. I think this is very, very significant, that the oil countries we're always looking out for are coming to our aid. And, the tsunami countries, too.
I love the one that is sending inflatable rafts.
And dike (not dyke) engineers from Holland are a little late, but better late than never.
I'm gonna email this to my buds:
(Thanks, Connie!)

It was actually $100 million US Dollars. Considering we keep the Oman (leader of the country) in power, it's the least he could do!

Kuwait is donating $500 Million worth of oil products and other humanitarian aid.....

Not long ago Cubans, were complaing about all of the Cuban doctors being sent to Venezuela.

Now the total list has risen and is at more than 50 countries offering aid or providing actual assistance in some form.

I am thankful and grateful for all the countries that are donating everything and whatever, that they can.

At least they are making an effort.
It could be a really big team.

I read about an African nation or people wanting to send cattle.
That is how they judge wealth.

People will no doubt joke about their efforts, but they are at least trying and wanting to do something to help and are contributing what they consider to be wealth, after all, they don't have much cash and are willing to sacrifice a great amount of their wealth for the betterment of "the modern world" and people in need.

Japan also has included $300,000.00 in supplies as well in there offer, that was evidently overlooked....

The amount of the engineers being sent by the Netherdlands was a very small number. I do not know what that number is now

The Netherlands have great experience in dealing with living in a place that is under sealevel.... they have done so for hundreds of years.

I would not be so sure about that....have you ever seen a Sumo Wrestler?

Seriously though theJapanese are generally quite efficient at what they design and build...no matter how tall they are.

Edited to add the following. It may explain something...it may not, but it makes sense to me.
Hey all. I'm an American ex-pat living in Tokyo. Just a couple of quick comments about the seemingly token amount that Japan is offering in Katrina aid. Most importantly, there is a low limit to the amount that the Japanese government can offer in aid without the approval of Parliament. The lower house of Parliament was dissolved on Aug. 8th, 2005, and elections will be held Sept. 11th, 2005. After the elections, a real aid package is sure to be presented to the new Parliament. Also on the government's mind was the fact that at the time of the contribution, we were staring straight down the barrel of our own super typhoon, (equiv. of a category 5 hurricane). Fortunately, it has now been downgraded to the equiv. of a weak category 4 hurricane. Should be making landfall in about 18-24 hours, although it is already rainy and windy in Tokyo. If the Japanese govt. pledges substantial aid to the victims of Katrina, but screws up in it's own relief efforts post-Nabi, (which isn't, like, out of the question), the political reprecussions against the current USA-friendly prime minister could be extremely negative,(ouster). Most current satellite image of Typhoon Nabi: http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/jtwc/satshots/wp1405sair.jpg
The thoughts and prayers of all US ex-pats are with victims, rescue workers, military personnel, volunteers, govt. officials, and their families during this unprecedented event. God Bless America.

I know Russia offered help by way of emergency equipment and personnel, too...and they aren't on that list.

BUT.....

Not for anything, but just my thoughts:

Not everyone that the US has ever given aid to has stepped up to help in this. Oh well. Would be great if they did, but remember...we ARE viewed as somewhat of a superpower. And here people are making fun of some of the donations that were made or offered. MAYBE that's why some nations didn't offer....because they figured that Americans would scoff at what they would/could send, and say to hell with gratitude.

To those scoffing at other country's efforts: Have you contributed more than the nation you're mocking?

No?

Then STFU.

That made me think of my walk from the parking garage to my office this morning. 2 blocks. Quiznos corporate offices are downtown and they had some PR folks on the corner of the main pedestrian walkway taking collections and agreeing to match everything they collect.

I hardly ever carry cash with me, but there's usually some loose change floating around the bottom of my purse. Today it was just a handful of pennies. I was mortified I didn't at least have a $1 to toss in the bucket, but the guy was super cool about it, and took my pennies happily.

Are you guys talking to ME? Then, STFU, yourself. 8)
And both of you lighten up... I started the post as a big THANK YOU.
Did you miss that? Can you not take a little lighthearted humor for what it is? :(

P.S. I can accept the fact that maybe what I said is not that funny, but saying I am scoffing or making fun OF what other countries are doing is off base. I am very appreciative and felt that these countries needed our applause. I'm sorry I felt comfortable with you guys enough to just joke around. You don't know me well enough to say I am scoffing at what these countries have done for us. :x
