but it's not working... I went to my profile, and put the above address in the "link to", but obviously, once again, my computer hates me.

I don't know about "approved" but they do have to be a certain size. I can't remember the exact size, one of the moderators can tell you that.

They don't "need" to be approved, and even if they did that one would be fine.

I don't know a lot about the technical aspect of this stuff (but I promise, I mean well!)....your idea sounds sound. Give it a shot!

You're using the "smaller" fins up, right? (The main "rule" about avatars is to keep them about 140 x 140 pixel thingies).
