I disagree - too much extraneous sh*t on there - I bet you can't even taste the tails, hooves, or snout.

Silly... Portillos, or the one up here anyway, doesn't put ketchup on if you order it with everything... they only do if you specifically request it.

By the way, at home or a ballgame, or anywhere other than a "hot dog stand", I eat my hot dogs with just ketchup!

A true Chicago dog never has ketchup. Here's the recipe...

A-ha! This I did not know since I've only been to Portillo's once or twice... we only have one here in the city and it's not very convenient for me to go to. :-?

And I can understand this... I usually load my hot dogs with ketchup away from Wrigleyville Dogs!

Brown mustard is the only way to go. I only use yellow mustard if I have no choice.

Irving's in Wrigleyville will throw you out if you ask for Cat Soup.

Irvings and Super Dawg in Niles, Il are the two best.

addendum to Ann's post.

Vienna Beef Hot Dogs ONLY and poppy seed buns from S. Rosens Bakery or they are not authentic

Come on people, every self respecting cow part eater knows that ketchup is for burgers and Mustard (deli style - no puss yellow stuff) is for Hot Dogs.

Not much in this world is perfect.

The Chicago Hot Dog is perfect.

Boiled or steamed, not grilled, it lies regally in a lightly steamed poppy-seed bun and is anointed with:

Diced onion

Tomato wedges

Pickle relish the color of Kryptonite

Yellow mustard

A few sport peppers

A dill pickle spear

A shake of celery salt

There's your classic Chicago-style dog, a perfect teaming of tastes and colors and textures.

We don't have to mention, no ketchup! None! Ever! Do we?

Portillos is probably almost the only thing I miss about Chicago. We went there recently for a fam thing and went to portillo's twice. Yum. Everything but the hot pepper.
