LOL! That's my reaction too. No one goes to Key West for its beaches.

During our Key West trips, we usually spend an hour or two at Smathers Beach one day just for the heck of it. The only thing to do in the water is snorkel because it's just too nasty even for wading. I DID see a real conch on the bottom one time snorkeling off Smathers Beach, but there are many better places to snorkel off the keys.
Beaches, we don't need no stinkin beaches :D Agreed, was there in 2000 and couldn't use any of them - problem with the water and not allowed to go in. Drove from Hilton Head, stopped overnight in St. Augie. Went on a sailing, snorkel, kayak, sunset trip that was awesome. Stayed at the Wicker Guest House (B&B) on Duval.

Yeah, that's definitely your best bet.

If you really want a good beach go out to the Dry Tortugas for the day....it reminds me of a Corona commercial. From my understanding there are no "real" beaches on Key West because of the reef offshore.

We originally had reservations at the Southermost Beach and changed at the last minute because the rooms were bigger. The beach is pretty much like 100yds wide and the water is mucky and and full of sea weed so it is basically only good for sunning. Stick with the pool which most folks do. The location and hotel were great and like was mentioned earlier it is the other end of Duval which was about a slow 30 minute walk. Make sure you go to Blue Haven for breakfast, the best on the island. It was recommended to us by a fellow BN'er and it was right on (GREAT). There is a thread I started before we went called "Key West in the Summer Months" under Changes in Latitude, check it out for some good ideas of what to do and where to eat. Enjoy!

Stop at the seven mile grill for lunch. It is just before the seven mile bridge and is a good watering hole.

HEADIN' DOWN US1!
ditto to all of the above. When we go back, we'll definitely stay at the Southernmost Hotel again - it was nice, cheaper than SOTB but still close, and you still have beach access if you want it. Can't think of any good reason we'd go to Southernmost on the Beach instead...

On the drive down, take your time and stop by the local hangouts for lunch, etc. Colorful characters abound...

We did that last November... BEAUTIFUL beaches, great snorkeling.
But I heard it got hit hard by Rita yesterday. We took pix of people repairing hurricane damage on the Fort walls from Charlie/Frances or whoever it was hit last hurricane season.

Yes, we did that as well. Great trip and it lasted almost all day. If I were to do it again I would make sure I have either beer or wine to bring along. I would have but the boat boarded at like 7:45am. Also check out Irish Kevins, next to Sloppy Joes. There's a guy who plays during the afternoon it think his name is Solinski or something like that. He's a blast, I had my wife and kids there and everyone enjoyed "Coming in out of the heat".

Blue Heaven is a MUST

You must, must, must go to Blue Heaven for Breakfast. JB played there a few years ago on the water tower. If you go in the gift shop there's pictures of it. We were there for a week in April and stayed off Southard...two blocks from Duval. I personally like the Mallory Square area best. We spent a day at Fort Zachery Taylor beach - nice beach fwith chair rentals.
