I have 2000 miles on the new car... The manual, web site and sticker all say I should be getting 30 mpg on the highway. I bet 1950 miles are highway and I am getting at best 20 mpg.
I have an automatic gauge thingy that tells me this info... and it was 20.3 last month and 20.9 this month......Whats up?
PS... It is a convertable and I am topless alot... could that be a factor?

How fast are you driving. I learned today that if you reduce your speed from 70 mph to 60 mph you can get 4 more miles to the gallon....

On the highway 60 would get me pulled over for driving to slowly. Its 70- 72 usually

The mileage figures they quote you are always overly optimistic.

At 70 mph the drag from having the top down figures in a lot as well...

Top down will create a lot more drag which will lower your gas mileage.

Having the top down will cause alot of air drag, which will reduce your gas milage.
The figures they post are obtained driving top-up, 65 mph, on a flat surface, with the car running in overdrive.

Top down

low mileage if the car is new it will take at least 5,000 miles to brake in the engine remember keep alight foot on the accelerator peddle

Absolutely not. The gas companies love this line of thinking. You should always use the lowest grade of gas you can use without the engine pinging. Running a higher grade than needed will actually reduce the power you engine will make.

Make sure your tires are properly inflated. I was NOT getting the posted gas mileage on my new PT Cruiser. We checked the air pressure and brought it up to the recommended level and I'm getting about 4 more miles to the gallon with the same gasoline and same driving style. I even checked it about a week after a tire rotation and each tire was down about 10 pounds so I'm wondering if the dealership just rotated and did not even brother to put air in'em!
