I just emailed Deuce2004 (a/k/a my keet :D ) and asked about the pillowcases being able to be used - should have an answer either tonite or in the morning :-)

and cmpete - WTG!!!!!!!!!!! can you share your technique - I priced out patterns over the weekend and WHOA!!! the price was outrageous. I'm thinking pretty easy - take a yard of fabric - fold in 1/2 and sew up 3 sides and put a hem in the open end? Am I close? :D :D

I think that's the way my mom makes it. She made 100's of pillowcases in all different sizes and fabrics last year for craft fairs.

that is PHANTASTIC cmpete! Have we found out if they can use these pillowcases? Last thing I had heard was that we were waiting on word back from Crash on whether or not we can send these. I don't want to bust anyone's enthusiasm. I just hate to see all that effort put forth and then we not be able to send them.
Good point Dave
I KNOW that my DS and co-worker (Army types who won't be 'over there' until the first of the year) can use them....

I think it depends on the unit.

If Crash can't use 'em, they will make good 'easter baskets'!!

I agree....now what? :) I have at least 2 if not 3 people that would be willing to sew. We just need to get the material to them.

I think it's time for peeps to pony up and say whether they're gonna send material or make them themselves.........I'm actually gonna dig out my sewing machine tomorrow and see how difficult it will be for me   (I'm not really the domestic type  ).............

I'll be the first one to admit that I am domestically disabled. That's why I have recruited people to sew for me! :) I'll be getting material and helping logistics I think.

I would be glad to donate my sewing talents if they are still needed. I currently have approx 25-30 different tropical cotton prints (leftover from the summer stash) and would be glad to either sew some up or mail the fabric out to anyone else who wants to help.

For anyone who would need an actual pattern for pillowcases, or stockings if that becomes an idea, I can print one out and provide it already cut (I have a pattern program that customizes on size) to anyone who may need it.

A pillowcase would only take me about 10 minutes to make, so if that helps, just let me know :)

I guess I am just more skeptical since we havent heard from Crash... of course we could always do something else with the cases.

I dont have a sewing machine... so I would have to donate in another way. Is it feasible to sew 500 of these pillow cases?

Well I have 2 or 3 seamstresses that are ready to go. Plus there are several other people that have said they would sew. I think if we get started soon, I think it's feasible. We have phin power behind us...just about anything is possible!

What else are we going to do for the troops? I know there was some discussion about stuffing the cases or doing other things. We should probably start talking about that too.

Is 500 a reasonable number?? Well, if there are 4 of us doing them that is 125 each. I did 40 out of my stash in a weekend. and didn't make a noticable dent!! Can I come up with 125? Sure. (in fact, I may have that on monday...)

We need to think about shipping costs and (possibly) filling costs too.

And yes, I can guarntee to find soldiers to enjoy these - between my two units , and PHWebmistress we can easily find homes for them even if Crash doesn't get back with us.......

PHWebmistress - you have the basic concept - a pillowcase is a bag with a big hem. I have a slightly more sophisticated version that takes 1 yard and 15 minutes - and has no raw edges.... It is an easy thing to do, but I've found that most people 'get it' after seeing it done..... reading the directorions just doesn't make it for this project....

So if you are 'domestically challenged' think in terms of shipping costs. For the rest of us - lets get stitching....

Any ideas on where to find tropical fabric that won't cost an arm and a leg? I went looking a few weeks ago for palm tree fabric to make curtains for my bedroom and had the hardest time. Any suggestions?

cmpete, can you post the directions anyway, Just feel like trying to do something when I'm bored. Altho, I must admit I am a little skeered, I have another very simple pattern (don't even know where it is now 'cause I got so frustrated trying to figure it out like you said, it's probably something that you need to see done in order to do it)
but anyway, I'd like to try yours for the challenge of it. You've got my curiousity piqued!

Ok guys - we need to think of something we can do without hurting ourselves - unless the ladies would just like us to pitch in money for fabric...

My mom just told me that she saw some tropical fabric at Hobby Lobby on the clearance table. I'm going to head there tomorrow and I'll report back tomorrow evening.

I would say, if the guys want to picth in with buying fabric, that would be great! We also need to reserve funds for whatever else we decide to do as well. Just my $.02.

Some of us have no idea about this stuff - How much should it cost to make 10 pillowcases?

I still think we need to hear from Crash...I supppose you can get started....but with no input from our adopted troop we are kinda stuck...just my $.02.....

At this point we don't know who is eating the Halloween candy..... :-?
