Repetition on Radio Margaritaville
Am I the only one who's getting tired of hearing the same stuff over and over on RM? The most consistent repeats seem to be John Prine's "Crazy as a Loon" (which I have begun to loathe I hear it so much) and Peter Mayer's "The Last Island" (a song I liked at first, but it's starting to get on my nerves).
It's nice to hear the stuff that doesn't make on traditional radio, but it starts to sound like they have a set playlist when certain songs pop up again and again.
Am I alone on this one?

No you're not alone...
And to make matters worse Sirius has a no repeat policy
that prevents some of RMs best features - like the guest DJ slots - from being on, as they used to be aired more than once per day.

I wouldn't mind repeating shows like they used to, provided they had to appear on different days and at diffferent times, that always seemed to expand their playlist a little.
I love hearing:
Lyle Lovett
Jerry Jeff
Little Feat
Jack Johnson
Paul McCartney
The Rolling Stones
and tons others
But it seems like they only have a few songs by each of these artists.
And where are:
Joe Cocker
Buena Vista Social Club (I hear one or two of these guys once in a while)
Ray Charles
Steve Tyrell
The Black Crowes
Brian Setzer
among others
What I love about RM is that it is so eclectic. You go from reggae to country to big band to Buffett to folk to southern rock to calypso etc.
If they have the collection that I imagine they do, and if it's all digitally stored (as it should be), they should just put the whole collection on random, and see what happens. Heck I could do that with my iPod and it would be two weeks before the same version of the same song repeated. I imagine RM could spend about a month or so rolling through their collection, and uncovering some really great stuff in the process..

I wonder what makes people think they don't? I guess the trick is fooling people into believing everything is off the cuff when really it's coming from a playlist. Try tuning in KGSR from Austin sometime. It may sound like their DJs are winging it but actually they're following a format: AAA (with a bent towards Americana).PalmettoSon wrote:It's nice to hear the stuff that doesn't make on traditional radio, but it starts to sound like they have a set playlist when certain songs pop up again and again.

It just seems to me that your playlist should be your library. If you've used iTunes, you know it's easy to track how often songs are played, when they were played last, etc. It seems that stations that claim not to have a playlist (RM for example) could easily work in popular stuff that most of the audience knows along with the lesser known stuff that makes that staion interesting without having to resort to a traditional playlist that lays out what to play and how often to play it.Jahfin wrote:I wonder what makes people think they don't? I used to like that song, before the first 10,000 times I heard it on RM.PalmettoSon wrote:The most consistent repeats seem to be John Prine's "Crazy as a Loon"

I miss all the rarities and the songs that never made it on any album, like the tracks off of Second Wind. And I do miss the "Down South Radio Progam" that Andrew Talbert hosted. I fear that RM has gone a bit more commerical and a little less "pirate radio". It's still better then Clear Channel but it's missing something that made it special. This is from someone who has it on at work all day.

Repitition
I emailed Steve Huntington about this very subject, 2 weeks ago. No response as of yet. I also suggested he start playing Pablo Cruise, older Little Feat, Lowell George, etc... Oh Well.

There is a way to eliminate the "no repetition" for the shows. They should try to develop new shows. If they hire me, I will gladly help them out in developing the new shows or even be a dj on them.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
Life is short, live long!!
I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.

Someone is bound to suggest a "listener request" hour. What that really is is that they wait for someone to name a song that is on their playlist then they play it
.
Seriously I've noticed some repetition, but I have to expect that, otherwise we'd only really need one radio station.
BTW what is this about a "no-repeat" policy on Sirius?
