In Quietly Making Noise, when Jimmy sings about "that old eastern shore," is he referring to Mobile Bay? I have only ever heard of the Chesapeake Bay region called the Eastern Shore, but Mobile makes a lot more sense.

Never really thought about it, but the only area I ever heard of being described as "The Eastern Shore" is the Chesapeake Bay area. And of course I know everything, so it must be true. Furthermore, now that I wrote this on an internet discussion board, it's on the internet so it REALLY must be true!

This started out as a serious thought, believe it or not

A Google search of ["eastern shore" -chesapeake -maryland -virginia] turns up places like Nova Scotia and Pulaski NY, as well as Alabama.
Anybody else got an "Eastern Shore" to add to the confusion?

He is talking about the eastern shore of Mobile Bay. He also sings about it in Tonight I Just Need My Guitar.

Pulaski, NY is on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario. Actually, I was supposed to be there this weekend to help control the salmon population, but alas, the Niagara Power Company had other plans

Interesting...I always figured the "Eastern Shore" he refers to in "Tonight I Just Need My Guitar" is the east coast of Florida -- where he calls home -- it fits so nicely following the trip to the "Far Side of the World" (previous song).
And, I'm not real familiar with the eastern shore of Mobile Bay...does it have a lot of beaches? (I remember seeing mostly docks, etc. on the western shore....)

It's the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, across the causeway from Mobile. Lulu's could be considered to be on the eastern shore, his parents used to live there.

I'm also thinking the Mobile area since he says in Tonight I just need my Guitar:
"Gulf Coast Nights, flounder lights, I'm back on the eastern shore"

seems I remember someone telling me that Lulu's is where he actually wrote the song . .
we visited the original Lulu's last year . .and the setting was perfectly descriptive/ connected to the song . .
there's even a chair right down by the water's edge. .
. . I could almost picture Jimmy sitting there in the evening hours . . with his guitar . . .reflecting on things . .
yep. . to me, that's the place the song is about . . .

The Buffetts love the Eastern Shore of Alabama, it is considered their roots. so I agree he is talking about LA, Lower Alabama.

Well then how cool is that? ....that LuLu decided to move back to Alabama several years ago so now Jimmy still has a place to go "home" to....

Eastern Shore...

Most likely it is Mobile Bay.
Eastern Shore is what the locals in Mobile refer to as the area of Daphne Fairhope and Point Clear where his folks lived and LuLu still does. It is the Eastern Shore of the bay.
